Phlebotomy Technician

Position Overview:
The Phlebotomy Technician is accountable for executing all responsibilities associated with phlebotomy, which includes specimen collection, receipt, and referrals.

- Ensures the quality of work performed by all team members, coordinating services to guarantee customer satisfaction and operational efficiency.
- Adheres to CAP, JCAHO, OSHA, infection control, safety, and other regulatory standards, ensuring the privacy and security of health information (PHI).
- Keeps the collection area and equipment in a clean and sanitary condition, restocking supplies as needed.
- Collaborates with the team lead to procure necessary supplies for the department.
- Conducts all phlebotomy tasks, including specimen collection, receipt, and send-outs.
- Prepares specimens for external laboratory referrals, which includes ordering tests, packaging specimens, arranging transportation, and completing referral documentation.
- Performs various patient specimen collections, such as venipuncture, capillary collection, urine drug screens, skin tests, and cultures.
- Ensures that all specimen requirements are met during collection to maintain specimen integrity.
- Exhibits strong communication skills while interacting with customers, patients, family members, nurses, physicians, clients, and colleagues.
- Utilizes the laboratory information system to document specimen details, patient registration, order entry, collection lists, and other assigned duties.
- Completes additional related tasks as assigned, including on-call duties, inventory management, special projects, and cross-training.
- Conducts performance evaluations and annual competency assessments for team members in a timely manner.
Education/Skills:
- High School diploma or equivalent is required. Diploma or transcript must be provided at the time of hire.
- Completion of a Phlebotomy, Medical Laboratory, or Medical Assistant program that includes phlebotomy is preferred.
- Familiarity with medical terminology, data entry, and organizational skills is essential.
- Preferred: One year of experience in phlebotomy.
- Certification from a Nationally Accredited Program is preferred.
