Job Summary

At Institute for Community Living, Inc., we are dedicated to providing care that changes lives. Our Family Peer Support Services are designed to empower families caring for children with social, emotional, medical, developmental, substance use, and/or behavioral challenges. As a Family Peer Advocate, you will play a vital role in supporting these families, connecting them with appropriate services and supports, and empowering them to make informed decisions about their child's care.

Key Responsibilities
  • Engage with families to understand their strengths, needs, and goals, and connect them with relevant services and supports.
  • Provide education, outreach, advocacy, and recovery support services to families seeking and sustaining recovery on behalf of their child.
  • Facilitate meetings between families and service providers, and assist families in gathering and preparing documents needed for specific services.
  • Address concrete or subjective barriers that may prevent full participation in services, and support families during stages of transition.
  • Coach and model shared decision-making and skills that support collaboration, and empower families to self-advocate.
  • Support families in discovering their strengths and concerns, and assist them in identifying and setting goals and short-term objectives.
  • Prepare families for meetings and accompany them when needed, and provide opportunities for families to connect to and support one another.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or General Equivalency Degree (GED) preferred or a State Education Commencement Credential.
  • New York State Credentialed Family Peer Advocate (FPA) or Certified Recovery Peer Advocate with a Family Specialty (CRPA-F) certification.
  • Ability to work with recipients/residents, families, and staff in a caring and respectful manner, and with due understanding of and consideration for cultural differences.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with staff, recipients/residents, families, and the public.
  • Ability to prepare accurate and timely documentation, reports, and other written material as assigned.
