Aerospace Engineer for Experimental Facilities and Test Technologies

This position involves planning and conducting investigations and tests to ensure the success of assigned test facilities. The selected candidate will integrate resolutions across disciplines and provide technical expertise in the formulation of engineering policies and procedures.
The ideal candidate will meet with NASA or industry project and research managers to discuss current and future needs, problems, and required test programs. They will advise on facilities, capabilities, appropriate test techniques, and the technical aspects of the work.
The selected candidate will also integrate and oversee support contractor efforts to identify, plan, and implement proper maintenance of facility systems to ensure the availability, reliability, and effectiveness of test services.
Key responsibilities include identifying, analyzing, and resolving technical facility operational issues and directing corrective actions. The candidate will establish and refine methods and procedures to minimize costs to test customers while maximizing test effectiveness.
Additionally, the selected candidate will provide detailed technical guidance on assigned facilities to Division Chief/Complex Manager/Facility Manager and Project Manager regarding facility resource needs, both near term and for long-term strategic planning.

RequirementsThis position is open to U.S. citizens, nationals, or those who owe allegiance to the U.S. The selected candidate will be subject to a pre-employment background security investigation.

This position may require a one-year trial period.
QualificationsTo qualify for this position, the selected candidate must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 level. This includes performing aerospace or other complex technical testing, working with a team of engineers and/or technicians in support of aerospace or other complex technical tests or test facilities, and participating in cross-organizational or external partner collaboration and communication.
The ideal candidate must also have a bachelor's degree with a major in one of the following: engineering from a college or university that has ABET-accredited engineering programs, physical science, mathematics, life science, or other field of science, or computer science that included 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours of coursework in any combination of mathematics, statistics, and computer science with at least half of those hours in mathematics and statistics courses that included differential and integral calculus.
The selected candidate will be assessed on the following competencies: oral communication, planning and evaluating, technical competence, and test engineering.
EducationThe selected candidate must have a bachelor's degree with a major in one of the following: engineering from a college or university that has ABET-accredited engineering programs, physical science, mathematics, life science, or other field of science, or computer science that included 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours of coursework in any combination of mathematics, statistics, and computer science with at least half of those hours in mathematics and statistics courses that included differential and integral calculus.
The ideal candidate must also have a graduate degree in an AST qualifying field, as listed above.

This appointment may be extended beyond the initial appointment date, for a period not to exceed a total of six years.
Under the NASA Flexibility Act of 2004, individuals appointed under this announcement may be converted to permanent appointment, either non-competitively or through internal agency competitive placement procedures.
