Job Description

The Ophthalmic Technician plays a vital role in the care of patients in a clinic setting. As an Ophthalmic Technician, you will greet patients and explain what they should expect during their appointment. You will escort the patient to an exam room and perform diagnostic ophthalmic tests and procedures prior to the physician seeing them, such as visual acuity, tonometry, and lensometry. You will also ensure that appropriate notes and updates are made to the patient's chart/records accurately. Additionally, you will maintain the clinic environment, including sterilization and cleaning.

Responsibilities
  • Interact with patients to accurately gather information and enter it into our electronic medical records system;
  • Proactively engage patients in communicating what to expect with the visit and continue to communicate delays or any other changes with the patient;
  • Initiate and perform documentation of the patient's chief complaint, present illness, and capture past medical history;
  • Accurately record all information in the EMR system according to established standards and physician requirements;
  • Conduct tests and measures eye muscle function, pupil size, and reactivity;
  • Apply drops to anesthetize, dilate, or medicate eyes;
  • Assist with minor surgery procedures, intraocular injections, and laser treatments in an exam room or treatment room, including preparing patients for sterile procedures;
  • Educate patients regarding the administration of medications and pre and post-operative instructions, as directed by physicians;
  • Readily scribe for physicians;
  • Secure patient information and maintain patient confidence by completing and safeguarding medical records, completing diagnostic and procedure coding, and keeping patient information confidential, following all HIPAA requirements;
  • Utilize effective problem-solving skills to respectfully and efficiently de-escalate any dissatisfied patients;
  • Demonstrate basic knowledge of eye anatomy, disease, symptoms, and ocular medications;
  • Stay current with the latest technologies and medications and be able to answer general patient questions;
  • Assist team members and complete other special projects as requested.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent;
  • Valid driver's license and ability to drive a motor vehicle;
  • Ability to stand or sit for extended periods of time and lift up to 50lbs.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Electronic Medical Records (EMR) experience;
  • Knowledge of medical terminology;
  • Entry Level;
  • Typical has 0-3 years of Experience.
