Position Overview

The role of the Special Education Paraeducator is designed to support the educational framework by providing assistance in the supervision, care, and instruction of students with special needs. This position is crucial for facilitating the implementation of instructional plans, monitoring student behavior, and offering clerical support to educators.

Reporting Structure

This position reports directly to the Director of Special Education.

Key Responsibilities

  • Adaptation of Learning Materials: Modify classroom activities and resources under the guidance of the supervising teacher to align with educational objectives and meet Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals.
  • Assessment Administration: Assist in administering tests, homework, and make-up assignments to support classroom instruction.
  • Professional Development: Participate in meetings and training sessions to enhance job-related knowledge and skills.
  • Collaboration: Communicate effectively with instructional staff and healthcare professionals regarding student progress and IEP implementation.
  • Student Supervision: Ensure safe and efficient travel for students during transitions.
  • Intervention Implementation: Under the supervision of the assigned teacher, apply research-based interventions and monitor progress for students requiring academic support.
  • Conflict Resolution: Address potential conflicts using appropriate techniques to maintain a conducive learning environment.
  • Record Keeping: Maintain instructional materials and records to ensure availability and compliance with requirements.
  • Behavior Monitoring: Oversee students' daily schedules and behavior plans to foster a safe and positive learning atmosphere.
  • Clerical Support: Perform general clerical tasks as time allows to assist in curriculum implementation.
  • Additional Duties: Carry out other related responsibilities as assigned to ensure the effective operation of the educational unit.
  • Classroom Supervision: Provide temporary supervision of the class to maintain a safe learning environment when the teacher is occupied with individual student needs.
  • Instructional Support: Facilitate instruction in individual and group settings to reinforce learning objectives and support IEP goals.
  • Group Supervision: Oversee groups of students in various settings to ensure safety and a positive educational experience.

Qualifications

Skills and Competencies: Candidates should possess the ability to manage multiple tasks and adapt to changing conditions. Essential skills include adherence to safety protocols, proficiency in office equipment and software, and accurate record-keeping.

Knowledge Base: A solid understanding of instructional practices, age-appropriate activities, safety procedures, conflict resolution, and child development is necessary.

Abilities: The role requires the ability to organize activities, analyze data, and utilize job-related equipment. Flexibility in working with diverse individuals and maintaining confidentiality is crucial.

Work Environment: The position involves physical demands such as lifting, carrying, and assisting students, typically performed in a safe and clean environment.

Experience and Education: Relevant job-related experience and targeted education in a related field are required. A college degree or teaching certificate is preferred.

Certifications: Candidates must possess necessary certifications and clearances as mandated.
