Job Title: Deputy Commissioner for Strategy

The City of Atlanta is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Deputy Commissioner for Strategy to join our team. As a key member of the City Planning Department, you will play a critical role in shaping the city's growth and development.

Job Summary:

The Deputy Commissioner for Strategy will be responsible for managing and coordinating the Directors of Design, Buildings, Housing and Community Development, and Zoning and Development to ensure the implementation of the Atlanta City Design and all other officially adopted planning documents. This position will develop a delivery plan for the execution of policies, programs, and projects across divisions to optimize City of Atlanta investments in design, planning, and regulations.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Work with the City Planning Commissioner to develop recommendations to the Mayor, Chief Operating Officer, and City Council on strategies, policies, and projects related to the city's growth and development.
  • Provide direction to a group of managers engaged in multiple activities related to the planning and community development function, establishing operating policies, providing management coaching and guidance, building relationships across department and City organizations, and developing and managing organizational budget.
  • Help plan for the long-term talent needs of the organization, identifying, coaching, and mentoring employees for future positions.
  • Assist with coordinating the development, implementation, and administration of the City's land use and zoning regulations, planning projects, building code services, property maintenance, and housing/economic development policies and programs, while advancing a vision for urban design and creatively utilizing spaces/places within the city.
  • Represent the Department of City Planning at internal and external meetings, attending and making presentations at City Council committee meetings and City Council meetings.
Requirements:

The ideal candidate will have a broad and detailed knowledge of the functions led, knowledge of general management principles and approaches, and advanced knowledge of core technical and/or operations issues related to the area of assignment. They will also possess exceptional leadership and motivational skills, the ability to visualize and plan organization operations to accomplish strategic goals, and exceptional ability to build complex relationships within the organization and with external stakeholders or partners.
