Job Responsibilities

The Commonwealth of Virginia is committed to safety, community service, and excellence. If you are passionate about infrastructure and innovation, we invite you to become a vital part of our team dedicated to maintaining the state's roadways. As a Maintenance Operator, you will play an essential role in enhancing the highways that connect our communities and foster progress throughout Virginia.

In this role, you will:
*Collaborate with a team to clear drainage systems, remove debris, manage brush, and conduct roadway upkeep. Responsibilities include installing culvert pipes, grading gravel roads, hauling materials, rolling patches, and performing various manual labor tasks necessary for road maintenance.

*Operate various machinery, including but not limited to dump trucks, backhoes, graders, tar kettles, rollers, and loaders. You will be responsible for conducting pre-trip and post-trip inspections and ensuring equipment is maintained and ready for use.

*Utilize hand and power tools while performing manual labor tasks.

*Respond to emergencies that obstruct roadways, such as traffic incidents and debris, to provide traffic management and assist in reopening roads. During adverse weather conditions, you will prepare for and operate equipment to clear snow and ice, as well as work in other hazardous weather scenarios affecting road safety. Emergency response may require working outside regular hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

*Establish work zones and implement traffic control measures, prioritizing proper worksite safety. Safety is our utmost priority, and you are encouraged to identify potential hazards and suggest improvements.

Minimum Qualifications

*Experience in roadway maintenance or construction, or familiarity with the materials, methods, and procedures used in these fields.
*Proficient in operating equipment such as dump trucks, loaders, graders, and backhoes.
*Ability to read and follow both oral and written instructions.
*Capable of performing heavy manual labor, including frequent lifting of up to 50 pounds.
*Skilled in the use of hand and power tools.
*A valid driver's license is required upon hire. A Commercial Driver's License and DOT medical certification must be obtained within 11 months of employment and maintained thereafter.

Additional Considerations

*Current CDL (Class A or B) with appropriate endorsements is preferred.
*Experience in preventive maintenance and minor repairs of equipment.
*Experience in emergency operations, including snow removal and response to storms and accidents.

Special Instructions

This position requires unrestricted mobility, the ability to work in various weather conditions and terrains, and standing for extended periods. Must be able to lift 50 pounds. Approved safety footwear is required, which is a reimbursable expense.

All drivers hired without a valid CDL must obtain their CDL within 11 months of their hire date. Operating commercial motor vehicles is prohibited until the necessary licensure and medical certification are obtained. Compliance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations is mandatory for entry-level drivers seeking to obtain or upgrade their CDL.

Background checks, references, work history, and driving records will be verified prior to employment. Selected candidates with a valid CDL must complete a pre-employment physical and drug screening; otherwise, candidates will be required to undergo a pre-employment physical. Applicants must be eligible to work in the United States. H1B VISA Sponsorship is not available. The Commonwealth utilizes a market-based pay program, which may not align with traditional pay bands.
