Job Title: Research Director

SEIU Local 521 is a leading union in the Bay Area, Central Coast, and Central Valley, representing over 50,000 public service workers. We are seeking a highly skilled Research Director to join our team.

Job Summary:

The Research Director will oversee a team of union research staff members, providing strategic research and campaign strategy to support our union's goals. This role will involve developing and implementing campaign and strategic research strategies, training researchers, and supervising staff.

Responsibilities:
  • Develop and implement campaign and strategic research strategies to support union goals.
  • Train researchers to serve as expert witnesses in med-arbs, arbitrations, and contract negotiations.
  • Supervise and develop research staff, including hiring, training, and evaluating team members.
  • Lead research trainings for members and new staff on topics such as budget analysis, industry-wide wage and benefit comparisons, and costing analysis for contract negotiations.
  • Apply an equity lens to data and policy, and train research staff on how to develop and apply an equity lens.
  • Coordinate with other senior staff to run programs under the leadership of the rank-and-file executive board.
Requirements:
  • Experience providing research in negotiations for collective bargaining agreements and contract negotiations.
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of rank-and-file leaders and involve them in every aspect of the union's work.
  • Strong planning skills, ability to discern priorities, and manage multiple projects.
  • Possess proven leadership and consensus-building skills.
  • Willingness to work long and irregular hours, including weekends and evenings.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience motivating, supervising, evaluating, and developing staff and holding them accountable to a campaign and workplan.
  • Strong commitment to progressive racial justice, social change, and activist values.
  • Strong research and quantitative skills.
  • Computer skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access, and a variety of computer-based research tools.
  • Excellent writing and communications skills.
