We are currently seeking a skilled Network Engineer to enhance our networking infrastructure, essential for the operation of our telescopes and observatory functions. This role is pivotal in establishing and maintaining high-capacity transcontinental and international network connections.

Key Responsibilities:

The Network Engineer will be responsible for:
  • Building and nurturing relationships with long-haul data communication providers to facilitate networks exceeding 100 Gigabits per second.
  • Engaging in cross-training initiatives for network support teams across various sites to promote collaboration and skill enhancement.
  • Defining and documenting communication systems standards based on stakeholder requirements in partnership with the Project Management Division.
  • Designing processes aimed at optimizing network performance through proactive monitoring and troubleshooting of network issues.
  • Assessing and improving the performance and resilience of the operational communications environment to meet the observatory's scientific and operational needs.
  • Collaborating with system architects to optimize network configurations and enhance access control measures.
  • Providing monthly reports on network operational status and utilization for stakeholder review.
  • Working alongside the Cybersecurity Officer to secure network systems by implementing and enforcing access policies.
  • Establishing procedures for upgrading network equipment and ensuring configurations are up to date.
  • Reviewing vendor billing for accuracy and participating in contract renewals or RFP preparations for ongoing services.
  • Evaluating network-related risks and recommending mitigation strategies.

Work Environment:

This position requires frequent desk work, utilizing standard office equipment, and may involve climbing stairs and lifting up to 25 pounds. Candidates should possess good vision capabilities and effective communication skills, both verbal and written.

Qualifications:
  • A Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Advanced degrees in related fields are advantageous but not mandatory.
  • A minimum of five years of relevant experience in network and systems management is required.

Competencies:
  • Strong organizational and leadership abilities with a focus on prioritizing tasks within the network team.
  • Capability to assess and address the technical demands of observatory operations.
  • A service-oriented mindset aimed at understanding and fulfilling end-user needs.
  • Excellent communication skills, particularly in conveying technical information to non-technical staff.
  • Proven teamwork skills, comfortable working with diverse and geographically dispersed teams.
