Position Overview:

The National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) is a renowned research institution dedicated to advancing our understanding of the universe. We are currently seeking a skilled Network Engineer to enhance our networking infrastructure that supports Telescope and Observatory operations. This role is essential for the design and management of high-capacity trans-continental and international network connections.

Key Responsibilities:

The Network Engineer will be responsible for:
  • Establishing and nurturing relationships with long-haul data communication providers for networks exceeding 100+ Gigabits per second.
  • Facilitating cross-training initiatives among network support teams to promote collaboration and skill enhancement.
  • Defining and documenting communication system standards in alignment with stakeholder requirements, in partnership with the Project Management Division.
  • Implementing processes to optimize network performance through monitoring, troubleshooting, and resolving outages efficiently.
  • Assessing and improving the performance and resilience of operational communication systems to meet the observatory's scientific and business objectives.
  • Collaborating with system architects to optimize network configurations and enhance access control measures.
  • Providing monthly reports on network operational status and utilization for stakeholder access.
  • Working alongside the Cybersecurity Officer to secure network systems by establishing and enforcing access policies.
  • Managing upgrades of data network equipment to ensure current firmware stability and configuring routing, switching, and firewall systems.
  • Reviewing monthly billing from communication vendors for accuracy.
  • Participating in contract renewals and preparing requests for proposals for ongoing services.
  • Evaluating and recommending mitigation strategies for network-related risks.

Work Environment:

The role involves frequent desk work, utilizing standard office equipment, and may require climbing stairs. Candidates should be able to lift and move items up to 25 pounds and possess specific vision capabilities. Effective verbal and written communication skills are essential.

Qualifications:
  • A Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field, or equivalent education and experience.
  • Advanced degrees in related fields are advantageous but not mandatory.
  • A minimum of five years of relevant experience in network and systems management is required.

  • Exceptional organizational and leadership abilities with a focus on prioritizing tasks within the network team.
  • Proficient in investigating and addressing the technical needs of scientific and business operations.
  • A service-oriented mindset aimed at understanding and fulfilling end-user requirements.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, particularly in conveying technical information to non-technical staff.
  • Effective teamwork skills, comfortable working with geographically dispersed and international teams.
