The Chef/Instructor plays a pivotal role in imparting knowledge to adults (and children, if applicable) regarding the essentials of baking, focusing on the specific area of expertise for which they have been engaged. We seek educators who can cover a diverse range of baking specialties, including but not limited to: breads, pies, doughnuts, cakes (including cake decoration), cookies, and Viennoiserie. The Chef/Instructor must possess the capability to tailor their teaching strategies to accommodate the varying skill levels of students and guests, emphasizing technique while fostering an enjoyable learning atmosphere.
Key Responsibilities
- Arrive one hour before class to guide the support staff (Kitchen Assistants) in preparing for the session according to all class preparation documents. Shifts typically last 5 hours.
- Supervise and coordinate Kitchen Assistants during preparation, class, and post-class activities.
- Ensure the classroom is adequately set up prior to the arrival of guests.
- Greet students and guests at the beginning of each class or private event.
- Instruct and assist students/guests in essential kitchen and food safety practices, house policies, and housekeeping protocols.
- Report any concerns regarding students/guests or staff to management for resolution.
- Utilize established systems for effective time management and communication.
- Actively promote relevant products and services offered by The Gourmandise School to students.
1. A minimum of 2 years of prior experience in baking instruction is preferred.
2. A positive demeanor and a commitment to delivering exceptional service while leading the classroom and kitchen support staff during classes or events.
3. A solid understanding of customer service principles, including assessing student/guest needs, meeting quality standards, and evaluating satisfaction.
4. A clear comprehension of food safety practices and possession of a current and valid food handlers' certificate.
Hours: This position is part-time, as needed. Flexibility is required, with most shifts occurring in the evenings and on weekends (both AM and PM), as well as Friday mornings.
