Position: Educational Counselor/Social Worker

Position Type: Full Time, 10-Month, Benefits Eligible

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Educational Counselor/Social Worker is responsible for delivering supportive counseling, consultation, and services to the linguistically, racially, and ethnically diverse student population, their families, and the broader community.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conduct individual counseling sessions as required by the Individualized Education Program (IEP) for students aged 3-21 years.
  • Provide counseling and support as necessary.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records for assigned caseload.
  • Offer family counseling as needed.
  • Facilitate psychoeducational and therapeutic group sessions.
  • Consult with educational staff to enhance student support.
  • Prepare Mental Health Evaluations and Social Histories for referrals.
  • Assess psychiatric emergencies, including suicide evaluations.
  • Participate in team meetings and professional development trainings.
  • Provide information regarding entitlement services.
  • Collaborate with the school to develop and adjust programs.
  • Work in partnership with community agencies.
  • Support the school's strategic planning initiatives with a focus on cultural responsiveness, demonstrating commitment to the school's purpose, vision, and mission.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the supervisor.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues and administrators.
  • Capacity to build rapport and maintain professional relationships with students and families.
  • Strong time management, planning, and organizational skills.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Master's Degree in Social Work or Counseling.
  • Possession of relevant state or nationally recognized professional certification/licensure (such as NYS LMSW/LCSW or NCC/LMHC) or the ability to obtain within one year of employment.
  • Understanding of child and adolescent development.
  • Experience in counseling.
  • Ability to communicate in American Sign Language (ASL).

SECURITY CLEARANCE:

  • Required clearances include medical clearance, fingerprinting by the appropriate educational authority, and background checks.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Extended periods of walking throughout the building.
  • Ability to lift up to 15 pounds occasionally.
