Job Summary

This role is responsible for assisting the Dining Services Manager in providing high-quality food to students and staff at Williamsburg-James City County Public Schools.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Prepare and cook a variety of meals as directed by the Dining Services Manager, following standardized recipes and guidelines for food safety.
  • Monitor and adjust cooking equipment to ensure optimal temperatures and textures.
  • Bake, roast, and steam food items, including breads and pastries, to meet nutritional standards and customer preferences.
  • Set up and maintain serving lines, including steam tables, to ensure an efficient and safe dining experience.
  • Serve designated portions of food to customers, adhering to portion control guidelines and maintaining a clean and organized serving area.
  • Follow standardized recipes and procedures for food preparation, without modification.
  • Assist in cleaning and maintaining the dining area, including sweeping and mopping floors, washing dishes, and sanitizing equipment.
  • Maintain proper sanitation and personal hygiene practices, adhering to guidelines for professional appearance and food safety.
  • Check in grocery supply orders and put away stock, ensuring accurate inventory and efficient storage.
  • Perform cashier duties as assigned, operating computerized point of sale systems and accurately recording reimbursable meals.
  • Serve breakfast, lunch, and a la carte items to customers, and maintain a positive attitude and excellent customer service skills.
  • Participate in formal and informal training, including annual training hours required by the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act.

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Dining Services Manager or other school administrators.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ability to understand and follow detailed written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and tactfully with students and school staff.
  • Ability to apply standard weights and measures to recipes.
  • Valid food handler's card from the local health department.
  • Ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds daily for short periods of time.
  • Ability to stand and walk for up to 5 hours.
  • Ability to read standardized recipes.
  • General knowledge of food preparation equipment and safety procedures.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, students, and school staff.

Supervision and Working Conditions

This role may supervise the duties of other dining services staff in the absence of the Dining Services Manager. Performs duties under the direct supervision of the Dining Services Manager, with guidance and direction as needed from school administrators. May be required to work in extreme temperature variations, lift heavy objects, and reach above shoulder height.
