POSITION SUMMARY:
The Optical Specialist is responsible for accurately measuring, fitting, and customizing lenses and frames for clients based on prescribed optical specifications.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Interpret optical prescriptions provided by ophthalmologists and optometrists.
- Gather essential eye measurements, including corneal dimensions.
- Guide patients in selecting appropriate eyewear and lens options, including various tints and coatings.
- Adjust eyeglasses to ensure optimal fit and educate clients on the care of eyewear and contact lenses.
- Prepare work orders for laboratory technicians to guarantee the correct lenses are produced.
- Repair damaged frames and collaborate with suppliers for purchases and returns.
- Monitor orders, prescriptions, and inventory, adjusting as necessary based on sales forecasts.
- Develop competitive pricing lists.
- Process eyeglass insurance claims and perform reconciliations.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Proficient knowledge of optometric procedures and equipment, including accessioning and verifying specimens. Familiarity with optical terminology and HIPAA privacy regulations is essential.
SKILLS:
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong organizational and time management abilities.
- Proficient in computer usage and various software applications, including Electronic Health Records (EHR), Word, Excel, Access, and Outlook.
- Adept at managing multiple priorities and problem-solving.
- Ability to perform under pressure while achieving set objectives.
- Maintain high standards of professional integrity and personal ethics.
- Exhibit professionalism and sound judgment in patient interactions, ensuring privacy and confidentiality.
- Capable of working independently as well as collaboratively within a team.
- Represent the organization positively.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
A high school diploma or GED is required, along with American Heart Association BLS/CPR certification. A minimum of two years of experience as an optician, with proficiency in Electronic Health Records (EHR), is mandatory.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
This role is situated within a healthcare environment, necessitating frequent standing, walking, and computer usage. Employees are encouraged to adjust their physical position for comfort as needed.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Stand for 75% or more of the workday.
- Walk for 15% or more of the workday.
- Sit for 10% of the workday.
- Occasionally lift and maneuver up to 35 pounds.
- Engage in bending, squatting, kneeling, reaching above shoulder level, and twisting as required.
- Utilize hands repetitively for tasks such as grasping, fine manipulation, and computer operation.
- Maintain sensory skills (speech, vision, smell, touch, and hearing) corrected to near normal range.
