PRIMARY OBJECTIVE: The Commodity Manager is responsible for facilitating manufacturing needs through the procurement of essential commodities. This position requires the application of expertise and independent judgment to make significant decisions that impact the organization.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Gain familiarity with the S&OP process by collaborating with scheduling, plant operations, sales, and engineering to create forecasts and implement procurement systems that enhance efficiency.
  • Develop a thorough understanding of assigned commodities, including pricing, market trends, and supplier capabilities, while sourcing from competitive suppliers.
  • Engage with suppliers to ensure reliable capacity and timely deliveries to align with manufacturing schedules, including emergency expediting when necessary.
  • Negotiate pricing, terms, and lead times, and formulate contracts with suppliers to optimize costs, enhance quality, and ensure timely delivery with moderate oversight.
  • Assist in crafting and executing supply management processes that maximize supplier contributions and support strategic goals.
  • Lead commodity teams to improve internal communication and foster consensus in decision-making.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing facilities to monitor material availability, purchase order performance, and inventory management.
  • Oversee a team and establish the overall procurement strategy for the assigned manufacturing facility.
  • Work closely with design engineering to develop new products through the exploration of raw materials and procurement opportunities that reduce costs and improve product quality.
  • Maintain updated supplier data to support departmental efforts in enhancing procedures and processes.
  • Embody and promote the organization's core values in all actions.
  • Perform additional duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Preferred BS/BA degree or equivalent experience.
  • Professional certification such as CPM or APICS is preferred.
  • A minimum of 7 years of direct purchasing experience in a manufacturing setting.
  • Experience in leading small teams is advantageous.
  • Strong understanding of industrial markets, manufacturing processes, and technical aspects of commodities.
  • Highly organized, disciplined, and committed to maintaining high work standards.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to engage effectively with colleagues and suppliers.
  • Demonstrated ethical decision-making capabilities.
  • Ability to perform under pressure and manage opposition effectively.
  • Exceptional negotiation skills that facilitate mutually beneficial agreements.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Standard office environment with regular exposure to production settings.
  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 20 pounds.
  • Occasional need to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, and reach.
  • Ability to work extended hours at a computer.
  • Occasional physical activities in limited spaces.
