Position Overview

Under general supervision, incumbents will engage in specialized tasks related to the receipt, processing, and evaluation of building and planning permit applications, alongside the issuance of relevant permits.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Receive and assess inquiries, reviewing permit applications and supporting documents for accuracy and compliance with applicable codes and regulations.
  2. Process and issue various building permits, including routine approvals.
  3. Conduct plan checks to ensure adherence to established criteria.
  4. Coordinate plan reviews and facilitate communication between applicants and relevant parties.
  5. Utilize fee schedules to calculate and collect permit-related fees.
  6. Maintain accurate records and databases related to permit applications.
  7. Provide guidance on building and planning processes, interpreting regulations and resolving inquiries.
  8. Assist in the administration of departmental activities and contribute to policy implementation.
  9. May provide training and direction to junior staff.

Qualifications
Applicants should possess a combination of education and experience that demonstrates the required knowledge and abilities for the position. A typical qualification path includes:
  • Education: High school diploma with specialized training.
  • Experience: Three years of public contact experience, including two years in building permits or related fields.

Knowledge and Skills
Candidates should be familiar with permit approval processes, building construction practices, and relevant codes. Strong organizational and communication skills are essential, along with proficiency in modern office technology and software.

Other Requirements
Possession of a Permit Technician certificate from the International Code Council is required. Selected candidates may need a valid California Driver's License.
