Role Overview:
The Fiber Optic Construction Technician is tasked with splicing various sizes of fiber optic and copper cables in both outdoor and indoor environments. This role includes reading, creating, and maintaining splicing schematics and diagrams, as well as overseeing outside plant (OSP) activities related to assigned work sites, ensuring adherence to project timelines. The technician will also be responsible for maintaining crew safety by providing guidance on procedures, road safety, manhole safety, and general on-site project oversight, while attending safety meetings as required.
Daily responsibilities include meticulous record-keeping of fiber route details, slack locations, splice locations, and updating drawings as necessary. The technician will manage material inventory, conduct DOT vehicle inspections, and perform other duties related to outside plant construction.
Key Responsibilities:
- Splice cables using hand tools, epoxy, or mechanical equipment as necessary.
- Splice fiber optic and copper cables, including both loose tube and ribbon optic cables, ensuring proper splice case construction.
- Prepare and maintain splicing records, schematics, and diagrams.
- Interpret staking sheets and blueprints accurately.
- Perform work in compliance with industry standards, including RUS standards, while following design engineers' instructions and specifications.
- Prepare engineering field notes and interpret underground and aerial telecom facilities with clarity.
- Engage in engineering, permit, and construction processes to support project contracts as needed.
- Measure signal strength at utility poles using electronic test equipment.
- Inspect or test lines or cables, recording and analyzing test results to assess transmission characteristics and identify faults.
- Conduct routine maintenance and address route issues as required.
- Perform various outside plant construction tasks.
- Complete additional work as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Ability to pass pole climbing certification.
- Capability to lift, push, or pull up to 75 pounds.
- Willingness to work in all weather conditions year-round.
- Comfortable working in confined spaces and at heights.
- Availability for an on-call schedule rotation, including days, nights, weekends, and holidays as needed.
- Valid driver's license and minimum qualifications to obtain a CDL.
- Ability to pass DOT certification.
- Willingness to travel as required.
- Exceptional time-management skills and attention to detail for accurate paperwork completion.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in pole climbing.
- Completion of OSHA 10 Hour Safety Course and Buck Squeeze (Pole Climbing Certifications).
- Proficiency in operating various construction equipment.
- One year of outside plant construction experience or related Trade School certification.
