Core Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement communication strategies that effectively convey complex information to diverse audiences.
  • Generate and manage content across various platforms, including social media and official university channels, representing the President's voice.
  • Establish program outlines and manage project timelines to ensure successful execution.
  • Monitor and assess communication effectiveness through data analysis and metrics to achieve strategic goals.
  • Lead proactive communication initiatives to engage campus stakeholders and inform them of important developments.
  • Gain a thorough understanding of the diverse audiences for Presidential communications to tailor messages appropriately.
  • Conduct research to establish processes, timelines, budgets, and resources for various projects.
  • Advise the Chief of Staff and Senior Associate Vice President on emerging issues that may impact the university's mission and reputation.
  • Prepare high-level presentations, reports, and communications for the President and senior executives.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with community leaders and groups relevant to Presidential initiatives.
  • Conduct research and prepare detailed reports as assigned by senior leadership.
  • Compile quarterly and annual reports on projects and initiatives, highlighting relevant trends and needs.

Essential Skills and Qualifications

  • Proficient in identifying communication needs and target audiences using various platforms and best practices.
  • Skilled in interviewing and writing for multiple formats, including web and print.
  • Knowledgeable about policies and regulations related to discrimination and harassment in public organizations.
  • Familiar with federal and state laws, as well as university policies.
  • Understanding of historical and local contexts regarding equity and diversity.
  • Demonstrated project management capabilities.
  • Exceptional communication skills, both verbal and written, with a focus on empathy and cultural competency.
  • Experience with data visualization and graphic design is advantageous.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to foster professional relationships across various university levels.
  • Proficient in software applications such as Word, Excel, and Google Suite.
  • Knowledge of AI and its implications for communication strategies.
  • Able to work independently, manage multiple tasks, and maintain attention to detail.

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Public Relations, Communications, English, or a related field.
  • Five to seven years of experience in writing executive communications for senior leaders.
  • Proven track record as an executive speechwriter.
  • Experience in managing communication strategies and messaging.
  • Ability to analyze and present data effectively as part of project management.
  • Experience collaborating with a wide range of stakeholders, including academic and community groups.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in a relevant field.
  • Experience in an academic environment.
  • Familiarity with various communication methods, including digital and traditional formats.
  • Minimum of eight years of experience in executive-level project management.
  • Experience handling confidential information.
  • Proficiency in data visualization and web editing.
  • Experience in a fast-paced institutional setting.
  • Customer-oriented approach in service delivery.

Compensation and Benefits

This position is classified as Administrator II with a competitive salary range. San Jose State University provides a comprehensive benefits package that typically represents a significant percentage of the base salary.
