Position Overview
The University of Southern Indiana is seeking applications for the role of Academic Advisor within the Romain College of Business.
This position is pivotal in guiding students majoring in various programs within the Romain College of Business. Responsibilities include monitoring academic progress, assisting with course registration, and addressing issues related to academic performance and graduation requirements.
1. Act as a liaison between the Romain College of Business and its student body, as well as other academic departments and the Registrar's Office.
2. Serve as the primary contact for students seeking information about College programs.
3. Utilize student placement scores and academic records to provide informed advice regarding course enrollment, assess the need for enrollment exceptions, and communicate any missing prerequisites or graduation requirements.
4. Make informed decisions regarding changes to students' class schedules and appropriate course placements.
5. Maintain accurate student records, monitor graduation progress, and facilitate necessary referrals.
6. Provide advising during critical periods such as major advising sessions and New Student Orientation, as well as throughout the academic semester.
7. Contribute to the development and execution of a Diversity Plan focused on the recruitment and retention of underrepresented minority groups.
8. Collaborate with other University departments to address the advising needs of special populations, including adult learners, student athletes, federal and state aid recipients, at-risk students, veterans, students with disabilities, and international students.
9. Compile and analyze data for the College's advising assessment program as requested by the Advising Center Director.
10. Assist in the development of training programs for faculty and staff involved in advising within the College.
11. Participate in recruitment activities such as Transfer Visit Days and Open Houses.
12. Stay informed about University and Romain College of Business policies, procedures, and curriculum updates.
13. Perform additional duties as assigned.
- Bachelor's degree.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple requests efficiently.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, along with strong interpersonal and problem-solving abilities.
- Capability to engage effectively with students and faculty from diverse cultural backgrounds.
- Proficiency in using computers, internet applications, word processing, spreadsheets, presentation software, and email.
- Creativity and resourcefulness in developing innovative ideas and outreach strategies for current and prospective students.
- Master's degree.
- At least one year of experience in academic advising or a related field at the collegiate level.
- Experience working with a diverse student population, including those receiving federal and state aid and students facing academic challenges.
- Familiarity with NACADA Core Values, CAS professional standards, and federal guidelines affecting students and faculty.
- Standard office hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
- Occasional irregular hours may be required.
- Flexibility in hours is necessary to accommodate students during registration and orientation periods.
- Some travel may be required for professional development and related activities.
