Key Responsibilities
  • Assist anesthesia providers in preparing patients for surgery, including setting up and applying anesthesia equipment.
  • Monitor and maintain anesthesia equipment, ensuring proper quality assurance, storage, and troubleshooting.
  • Collaborate with the anesthesia care team to respond to emergencies, such as Code Blue and Code Pink.
  • Prepare and apply patient warming modalities as needed.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and contribute to the development of policies and procedures.
  • Manage work assignments to ensure completion of patient care activities.
  • Assemble and prepare anesthesia airway setups, as well as prepare machines for malignant hyperthermia and latex allergy situations.
  • Utilize sterile technique to set up and assist with placement of invasive monitoring equipment.
  • Assist with obtaining lab specimens and ABGs, and ensure proper use and quality assurance of Point of Care testing equipment.
  • Coordinate patient monitoring equipment availability with PACU and Critical Care units.
  • Work with the perioperative team to facilitate prompt room turnover.
  • Assemble and prepare anesthesia equipment and supplies needed for general, regional, and local anesthesia.
  • Assist anesthesia providers with patient preparation, electrode placement, and use of ultrasound/nerve stimulator devices.
  • Perform mechanical tasks, such as pressing syringe plungers, as directed by the anesthesia provider.
  • Ensure sterile technique when preparing anesthesia trays and assisting with procedures.
  • Remove and dispose of supplies and equipment properly following procedures.
  • Operate cell salvaging, intra-aortic balloon pumping, and TEE devices as required.
  • Perform cleaning, sterilization, and decontamination of non-disposable anesthesia-related items.
  • Review and maintain inventory of disposable and non-disposable equipment, including supplies and initiate replacement using established contract vendors.
  • Maintain a clean, orderly, and functional work environment.
  • Participate in relevant local, regional, and national committees.
  • Develop and maintain working relationships with approved vendors.
  • Organize work to minimize overtime and identify opportunities for systems improvement.
  • Utilize payroll and non-payroll resources effectively and assist in capital budget preparation.
  • Consistently demonstrate a professional, supportive attitude and confront difficult situations constructively.
  • Participate in departmental professional development and mentor anesthesia students.
  • Support a collaborative labor-management environment and adhere to applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations.
Requirements
  • Graduate of an accredited program in Anesthesia Technology with an AS degree or certified by the American Society of Technologists and Technicians (ASATT) as a Technologist.
  • High School Diploma.
  • I.V. Certification or Anesthesia Technician Certificate from American Society of Anesthesia Technologists and Technicians.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support.
  • Basic Life Support.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform the duties and responsibilities required of a Certified Anesthesia Technologist.
  • Ability to lift 45 lbs of equipment from an overhead position on a daily basis.
  • Ability to push/pull up to 500 lbs.
  • Keyboarding skills and ability to use appropriate computer software applications.
  • Ability to stand or walk continuously.
  • Able to demonstrate knowledge and skill in the use of anesthesia equipment, including proper quality assurance, storage, and troubleshooting.
  • Working knowledge of Anesthesia department procedures, principles of asepsis, and sterile technique.
  • Able to demonstrate manual dexterity and mechanical ability.
  • Ability to exercise judgment and work efficiently and competently with minimal supervision.
  • Effective communication skills.
