About the Position:

The local Research Administration at George Mason University provides post-award research administration services to faculty members.

The Senior Research Administrator in the College of Science is tasked with overseeing post-award activities for a designated portfolio of grants and contracts within one or more units (i.e., school, department, division, institute, or center). This role requires expertise in grant and contract management rules and regulations, technical proficiency, and analytical skills. Responsibilities include regular financial review, reconciliation, and forecasting of award finances, preparing adjustments and corrections to award budgets, generating financial reports, and ensuring all financial obligations are fulfilled at the conclusion of the award.

Responsibilities:

The Senior Research Administrator will manage post-award activities for an assigned portfolio of grants and contracts, applying knowledge of grant and contract management rules and regulations, technical expertise, and analytical skills. Upon award acceptance, the Senior Research Administrator will establish account parameters, including billing and reporting requirements, budget, and cost-sharing obligations. The incumbent will apply federal and university regulations to manage effort allocation appropriately for individuals compensated wholly or partially from federal awards.

Key post-award activities include:

Regular financial review, reconciliation, and forecasting of award finances; Preparing adjustments and corrections to award budgets; Generating financial reports and ensuring compliance with all policies and award regulations; Interacting regularly with principal investigators and faculty members conducting sponsored research, providing high-quality customer service.

Additional responsibilities encompass:

Managing budget, reporting, and compliance timelines throughout the lifecycle of the grant or contract; Completing financial reports for sponsors as required by award terms; Assisting principal investigators with non-financial report submissions; Coordinating requests for No Cost Extensions, Carryover, rebudgeting requests, and other award modifications; Facilitating invoice approvals for subcontractors; Reviewing effort reports and managing the quarterly effort certification process; Assisting in the transfer of awards out of the university.

The Senior Research Administrator may also take on informal leadership roles within the College unit, including:

Collaborating with a team of Post-Award Specialists and overseeing daily activities; Monitoring workload distribution and addressing concerns with administrative leads; Coordinating with research administrative leads regarding pre-award activities and issue resolution; Ensuring quality in all staff activities and maintaining high levels of customer service; Facilitating inter-team meetings to enhance collaboration between pre-award and post-award teams.

Required Qualifications:

High school diploma or equivalent; Extensive experience in grants and contracts management (typically 5+ years); Knowledge of federal regulations related to research grant and/or contract activity; Ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects/tasks and handle a large volume of complex awards; Strong communication skills to interact with senior leadership and colleagues; Familiarity with financial processes and controls, including reconciliation; Excellent oral and written communication skills and customer service orientation; Strong organizational and analytical skills, with attention to detail; Ability to work independently with minimal supervision; Capacity to mentor personnel for professional development; Proficient in computer use, particularly MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in a related field or relevant combination of education and experience; Experience in Sponsored Programs Administration or a related field; Familiarity with university processes and systems related to grant and contract management; Knowledge of the Banner Financial system or demonstrated ability to learn complex electronic systems.
