In this pivotal role, reporting directly to the Plant Manager, you will be instrumental in developing and disseminating the comprehensive safety and environmental strategy while pinpointing relevant regulations and potential hazards across North America. This position necessitates close collaboration with Operations, Legal, Human Resources, and various other departments to ensure adherence to compliance standards across all sites.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design, implement, and uphold a Safety Management System in alignment with international benchmarks (ISO45001) and best practices in health and safety.
- Facilitate HSE discussions and promote collaborative efforts.
- Establish, implement, and uphold safety protocols (policies, regulations, and guidelines) and initiatives.
- Develop, execute, and evaluate performance indicators, compile accident statistics, and ensure accurate reporting of HSE data to the Group.
- Assess HSE performance, drive enhancements, and initiate targeted safety initiatives.
- Provide support and guidance to the Business Area, Legal Entity, management, and staff on HSE matters.
- Conduct assessments of Occupational Health and Safety risks and other related risks to the OH&S management framework (Job Safety Analysis, Risk Process Assessment, Environmental Hazards).
- Evaluate training requirements and design, develop, and coordinate safety training programs as necessary.
- Carry out HSE audits and inspections at various locations and construction sites.
- Lead and coordinate audits, ensuring follow-up on the implementation of audit recommendations.
- Create a safety communication strategy and establish regular communication routines and coordination meetings.
- Implement the HSE reporting framework, including immediate reporting for incidents.
- Disseminate safety notifications and lessons learned across all divisions.
- Collaborate with the Group HSE Officer, HSE Managers in different Business Areas, and the Regional Safety Coordinator.
- Assist management and employees with safety-related issues, particularly in workplace planning, the introduction of new processes, procurement of equipment and materials, selection of personal protective gear, and training.
- Support management in addressing identified deficiencies.
- Coordinate safety initiatives with designated personnel, the works council, and regulatory authorities.
- Enforce and maintain HSE regulations and Group policies within the legal entity.
- Develop and implement localized procedures and safety guidelines.
- Execute the safety program for the legal entity.
- Monitor HSE performance, drive improvements, and safety initiatives.
- Facilitate global safety training within the legal entity.
- Compile comprehensive reports (accidents, incidents, performance indicators, monthly site updates) and ensure accurate Group reporting of HSE data.
- Establish and maintain a systematic approach to workplace risk assessments.
- Analyze work-related incidents, accidents, and significant near misses.
Qualifications:
A Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Environmental Health and Safety, or a related discipline is preferred; 7-10+ years of experience in EHS within a manufacturing context, ideally in the paper sector. A strong understanding of EHS regulations and program requirements is essential. Certifications such as CSP, CPEA, CIH, CHMM, or equivalent are highly desirable.
Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint is required, with the ability to produce clear and precise reports and presentation materials. Attendance at professional development courses or seminars may be necessary to maintain expertise in safety and environmental compliance.
This role requires frequent travel to various locations in North America and the ability to navigate stairs, ladders, and lift items weighing up to 35 pounds.
