Key ResponsibilitiesThe Policy Associate will focus on advocating for economic liberty within state legislatures. The primary objective will be to advance legislation that safeguards the right to pursue a livelihood without undue governmental interference. This role will emphasize the repeal of excessive occupational licensing laws, particularly targeting lower-income professions, with a special focus on reforms in cosmetology and barbering.
- Conducting legislative research in collaboration with the Director of Legislation and Legislative Counsel, including:
- Assessing the necessity for new legislation
- Identifying supporters and opponents of bills, along with their strengths and weaknesses
- Engaging with key stakeholders
- Formulating and implementing legislative strategies alongside the Director of Legislation and Legislative Counsel, which includes:
- Establishing and nurturing direct relationships with bill sponsors
- Identifying and mobilizing grassroots advocates
- Building coalitions with members from a variety of political backgrounds
- Planning and executing media initiatives to garner support for legislation
- Monitoring legislative bills to ensure alignment with organizational strategies
- Lobbying and assisting grassroots advocates in their meetings with state legislators
- Coordinating testimonies for committee hearings
- Drafting written statements and providing testimony at committee hearings
- Creating and managing campaign web pages using government affairs software
- Bachelor's degree
- A minimum of one year of professional experience
- A strong understanding of and enthusiasm for the Institute's core principles, particularly in the area of occupational licensing reform in the beauty and barbering sectors
- Capacity to deepen expertise in the Institute's foundational pillars
- Exceptional interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate effectively and persuasively in both written and verbal forms with legislators, policymakers, activists, colleagues, coalition members, and media representatives
- Ability to analyze legislative bills and statutes in partnership with Institute attorneys
- Outstanding organizational skills, capable of executing detailed lobbying plans with diverse individuals and coalition members
- Proficiency in managing multiple projects and competing priorities under tight deadlines
- Resilience, positivity, and the ability to collaborate effectively with Institute attorneys
- Capability to work across the political spectrum while demonstrating professionalism in both appearance and conduct
- Ability to support and advance complex legislative initiatives
- Background in political science, lobbying, or political communication
- Experience working within a state legislature or in government affairs for at least one year
- Familiarity with government affairs software, such as Quorum or FiscalNote
- Experience in supporting and managing grassroots initiatives
- Public speaking experience
- Experience providing testimony at legislative committee hearings
- Experience in relationship building and development
- Willingness to travel frequently to state capitols
- Availability for weekend work during state legislative sessions
- Representation of the Institute at several conferences during the summer and fall
- Hybrid work schedule, requiring three days in-office each week, with four fully remote weeks annually
