Medical Technologist Core Lab Job Description

Mount Sinai Medical Center of Florida is seeking a highly skilled Medical Technologist to join our Core Laboratory team. As a Medical Technologist, you will play a vital role in providing high-quality laboratory services to our patients.

Responsibilities:
  • Communicate effectively with colleagues and supervisors to ensure seamless shift transitions and patient care.
  • Perform and document quality control procedures, reporting significant deviations to supervisors and implementing corrective actions.
  • Organize work to maximize productivity and efficiency, prioritizing tasks and managing time effectively.
  • Determine specimen acceptability and priority, taking action to ensure timely and accurate testing.
  • Maintain a minimum inventory of reagents and supplies to ensure adequate patient care and sufficient stock for the next shift.
  • Recognize and address equipment failures promptly to minimize delays in patient testing.
  • Document critical values and alert levels according to department policy.
  • Adhere to laboratory policies regarding standard precautions, PPE, biohazardous waste disposal, and routine waste management.
  • Consult supervisors or charge techs when faced with unusual situations, seeking guidance to ensure optimal patient care.
  • Provide assistance to colleagues and work alternative shifts or hours as needed or requested.
  • Teach and train staff as assigned, performing charge tech duties in the absence of the manager.
  • Address instrument flags before releasing patient results, monitoring delta checks and taking action as necessary.
  • Review work lists throughout the shift, addressing pending items and ensuring timely completion of tasks.
  • Clean and decontaminate workstations, disposing of specimens, reagents, and confidential information as required.
  • Perform manual differentials in blood and body fluids, identifying abnormal cells and applying knowledge of basic quality control troubleshooting.
  • Rotate through each section of the Core Laboratory, demonstrating flexibility and adaptability.
  • Apply knowledge of basic maintenance and instrument troubleshooting, understanding CAP regulations for each area of licensure.
Qualifications:
  • Licensed by the State of Florida (or eligible) in Hematology, Chemistry, Serology, and Immunology, with national certification preferred.
  • Commensurate with licensure requirements.
  • Completion of a training program in medical technology.
