Job Summary

The Nuclear Medicine Technologist plays a vital role in the diagnosis and treatment of patient medical problems by performing various Nuclear Medicine procedures under the supervision of a qualified physician.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform radionuclide procedures, including PET/CT and Spect/CT, under the authorization of a physician with a Radioactive Materials License issued by the Nebraska Health and Human Services Department of Radiological Health.
  • Prepare radiopharmaceuticals for administration by injection, ingestion, and inhalation; apply EKG patches and cables.
  • Use sterile technique as required.
  • Optimize patient anatomy and function through proper positioning, isotope selection, and technical factors.
  • Perform venipuncture.
  • Adhere to all state and federal regulatory requirements for control of radiation and practice radiation safety procedures; provide proper documentation for regulatory and accreditation requirements.
  • Assist Radiologist in the therapeutic use of radioisotopes under prescribed safety conditions as applicable.
  • Competently operate all nuclear medicine equipment and support systems to include HIS, RIS, scheduling system, and PACS; perform and evaluate images for technical quality.
  • Assess, plan, implement, evaluate, and document patient care and procedures in accordance with established nuclear medicine standards and guidelines.
  • Maintain accurate records of isotopes used.
  • Complete quality control on scanning equipment; maintain a safe working environment.
  • Utilize department computer systems, files, and PACS to review patient history and provide accurate documentation of studies.
  • Properly care for and image patients of all ages; maintain patient confidentiality.
  • Coordinate exams within the department and with other departments to provide expedient and complete care; communicate with medical staff, coworkers, patients, families, and other hospital staff to assure quality patient care.
  • Handle telephone calls for scheduling, coordination, and questions with courtesy and accuracy.
  • Participate in the department's quality improvement plan as required.
  • Clean, disinfect, and maintain equipment as necessary; notify supervisor of equipment problems and call appropriate service vendors as needed.
  • Keep work area properly supplied.
  • Access and administer drugs and biologicals that are pertinent to essential job functions in accordance with Medical Center procedures.
  • Utilize AIDET communication and provide patient education to inform patients about procedures to minimize patient anxiety.
Requirements

Graduate from a nuclear medicine program or equivalency required. Current certification or certification within three (3) months of hire by the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board or the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists in Nuclear Medicine required. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
