Nuclear Medicine PET/CT Technologist Job Summary

This individual will conduct Nuclear Medicine and PET/CT tests as prescribed by a physician. Identifies intravenous and oral administration dosage levels of radiopharmaceutical agents. Administers patient injections, performs diagnostic studies, uses scanners or scintillation cameras to detect radiation emitted, practices radiation protection techniques, patient shielding skills, and knowledge of applicable exposure factors, to minimize radiation to patient and staff.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Prepares and measures radiopharmaceuticals in diagnostic and therapeutic studies under direction of physician.
  • Injects patient with radiopharmaceuticals.
  • Scans for all nuclear medicine and PET/CT procedures: Cardiac, Endocrine, Gastrointestinal, Genitourinary, Infection/Tumor, Pulmonary, Skeletal and Therapeutic.
  • Proper patient positioning for exam.
  • Explains procedures to patient to reduce anxieties and obtain cooperation.
  • Performs quality control of dose calibrator, well counter daily before use.
  • Responsible for ordering radiopharmaceuticals on timely basis.
  • Discusses exams with Radiologist before patient dismissal.
Complete the following Hot Lab Duties:
  • Records all package deliveries/pickups in computer.
  • Keeps records of surveys and wipes.
  • Completes all daily surveys in computer.
  • Completes all weekly wipes and records in computer.
  • Maintains patient medical records respecting confidentiality and established policies/procedures.
  • Records time of injection and amount of dose.
  • Measures all doses prior to injection to ensure +/ - 10% of intended amount.
  • Follows radiation safety techniques in use and disposal of radioactive materials.
  • Continually observes MedQ tracking system for overall patient communication and procedural codes/timeframes.
  • Forwards images to PACS system.
  • Performs all required camera quality control.
  • Assists in the purchase of needed supplies and equipment.
  • Assists Patient Registrar(s) and Scheduler(s) with procedural questions.
  • Sends, receives and routes incoming/outgoing faxes.
  • Investigates discrepancies in non-routine situations.
  • Participates in required Radiation Safety and DOT training sessions.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by management.
Job Requirements and Qualifications
  • Education and Experience
  • Bachelor of Science in Radiologic Technology - Nuclear Medicine preferred
  • Two to three years Nuclear Medicine and/or PET/CT experience preferred
  • Certifications or Licensure
  • Current certification by the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (CNMT) or the American Registry of Radiologic Technologist in Nuclear Medicine (ARRT-N) required
  • Must maintain continuing education requirements for certification(s)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS)
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
  • Knowledge of the techniques and principles of Nuclear Medicine and PET/CT
  • Perform radionuclide procedures in accordance with all state/federal regulations (including HIPAA), company policies, standards and health & safety rules
  • Ability to perform IV or straight stick venipuncture
  • Strong knowledge of medical terminology in more than one specialty area
  • Demonstrates critical thinking, problem analysis and problem resolution skills
  • Ability to take initiative, be self-motivated and an independent, accountable, dependable performer
  • Ability to be accountable for quality customer service and respond appropriately to a variety of personalities and situations
  • Strong communication skills with demonstrated ability to express ideas and technical information clearly and concisely in a manner appropriate to the audience

  • Ability to maintain accurate records
  • Effective planning, organization and detail-oriented skills
  • Computer proficient and experience with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel & PowerPoint)
  • Ability to effectively utilize department computer systems, PACS and HIS/RIS systems to review and provide accurate documentation of studies
  • Occasional travel for training may be required
  • Ability to work overtime or varying hours to meet needs of client base
