Position Overview

The SBA Underwriter role is essential for evaluating, interpreting, and analyzing financial and credit data to determine the creditworthiness of commercial SBA clients, particularly focusing on moderately complex credit relationships. This position collaborates with Business/Commercial Bankers to enhance new and existing loan relationships, prioritizing credit quality and adherence to SBA regulations.

*Candidates must possess a minimum of 2 years of SBA underwriting experience.*

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct thorough reviews of financial documents, including financial statements, tax returns, and credit reports to assess borrower and guarantor creditworthiness.
  • Compile comprehensive financial and analytical reports for each entity, encompassing historical financial data, cash flow analysis, and projections.
  • Investigate relevant industry and market information pertinent to clients' business operations.
  • Draft detailed summaries of analyses for both new and existing loan relationships, evaluating cash flow sufficiency, collateral, and repayment sources.
  • Communicate significant analytical findings to Business/Commercial Bankers and management.
  • Monitor credit files, ensuring compliance with loan document requirements and covenant adherence.
  • Exercise independent judgment in credit analysis and take appropriate actions based on findings.
  • Engage in departmental projects and propose process enhancements.
  • Ensure compliance with SBA SOP rules and requirements for the SBA 7(A) and SBA 504 loan programs.
  • Provide technical guidance to Business/Commercial Bankers and clients.
  • Assist in mentoring and training junior Portfolio Managers.
  • Stay informed about industry trends, market conditions, and regulatory requirements affecting lending criteria.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Business, Economics, Finance, or a related field; or a high school diploma with a minimum of 10 years of relevant experience.
  • 7+ years of experience in credit analysis or portfolio management within a commercial lending context, with a preference for SBA experience.
  • Proficient understanding of commercial lending underwriting, including commercial real estate and SBA lending.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret financial statements, including balance sheets and income statements.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Excellent business math skills and the ability to communicate findings clearly, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks, prioritize effectively, and meet deadlines.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with a focus on collaboration and problem-solving.
  • Willingness to travel as necessary and work flexible hours.
  • Must be bondable.

Compensation

The salary range for this position is between $90K and $120K, commensurate with experience. This role also includes commission and an annual bonus based on the bank's profitability.
