Role Overview:

The Television Broadcast Specialist is a seasoned professional in broadcast and IT who is responsible for the design, documentation, enhancement, repair, operation, and modification of multi-platform systems. This role includes the development of new system designs and their implementation, which entails specifying the necessary hardware and software to meet TPT's operational requirements, as well as overseeing the deployment of new equipment and systems. The Specialist will collaborate with fellow Engineering team members to promote innovation in TPT's broadcast operations and manage a variety of file-based and live video production systems.

*Compensation: $35 - $45 per hour (based on qualifications).

*Union position (IBEW)

Key Responsibilities:

Video Systems Engineering (75% of time)

  • Deliver expert technical integration, assessment, support, and repairs for all components of video systems, encompassing operations, equipment repairs, and maintenance.
  • Respond to urgent situations and be prepared to repair production equipment related to live broadcasts and video systems.
  • Uphold a high standard of current industry safety protocols for secure event operations.
  • Maintain accurate inventory, maintenance schedules, and repair logs for video system components.
  • Provide recommendations and action plans for equipment maintenance, acquisitions, and policies for video implementation.
  • Oversee preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, and system calibration to ensure optimal performance at all times. Maintain updated documentation (e.g., line drawings, SOPs, and service agreements) and assist with system design and gear specifications for various projects.
  • Operate diverse equipment to support TPT productions.
  • Diagnose issues in file-based workflows including video, audio, and captions.
  • Configure and troubleshoot video production and live streaming systems.
  • Manage projects from inception to documentation.
  • Engage with internal stakeholders to plan, procure, install, configure, and test new systems.
  • Provide exceptional customer service to internal Production teams.
  • Create system documentation including signal flow diagrams and operation manuals.
Additional Responsibilities (25% of time)
  • Research new products, solutions, and technologies.
  • Recommend and implement action plans for equipment maintenance, acquisitions, and policies for video implementation for capital investment.
  • Actively participate as a member of the Engineering Team, contributing to shared goals and collaborating with colleagues to achieve priorities.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:

Required Experience
  • 5 years of experience in video systems engineering, including knowledge of video, audio, and captioning file formats; associated transcoding systems; video streaming compression systems; as well as PC and Macintosh computing platforms.
  • 5 years of experience in accurately operating and repairing equipment under the pressures of live production.
  • 5 years of in-depth experience and knowledge in technology and broadcast productions.
  • 5 years of technical production work in linear/non-linear broadcasts.
  • Hands-on experience with servers, virtual machines, storage, and networking equipment.
Preferred Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant technology field.
  • 6+ years of experience in video systems engineering, including knowledge of video, audio, and captioning file formats; associated transcoding systems; video streaming compression systems; as well as PC and Macintosh computing platforms.
  • Experience with audiovisual systems, including Crestron and Biamp.
  • Society of Broadcast Engineers (SBE) certification.
  • 1+ years of experience working with ATSC 3.0.
  • 1+ years of experience working with SMPTE 2110.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Full color vision acuity is essential for precise color matching of cameras and displays.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of broadcast signal flows.
  • Proficiency in evaluating, troubleshooting, installing, and maintaining broadcast equipment and IT systems.
  • Refined communication skills: verbal, written, presentation, and listening—capable of framing issues, summarizing information, and connecting across all levels.
  • Knowledge of video editing, production, and content creation.
  • Expert knowledge of current and familiarity with emerging broadcast technologies.
  • Strong computer skills: Microsoft Office Suite - Outlook, Word, Excel, OneDrive, Teams, Visio; the Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Ability to focus on production and end-user needs.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills, with the ability to multitask in a fast-paced, time-sensitive engineering environment.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and communicate effectively with all team members, as well as internal and external stakeholders.
  • Strong technical, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Outstanding attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage projects and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to lift and carry approximately 50 lbs., and work from a ladder or elevating lift.
  • This position requires occasional night and weekend work.
