Job Title: Teacher Assistant

Job Summary

The Teacher Assistant plays a vital role in supporting the Head Start program by assisting the Teacher/Director or Site Director in supervising play activities, enforcing safety rules, and intervening when children are likely to injure themselves or others.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Develop, write, and conduct planned lessons at least once a month, with opportunities for more frequent implementation as experience grows.
  2. Prepare and conduct center activities daily, such as circle time, science, home, or other, with guidance from the Center Director and Classroom Teacher as needed.
  3. Collaborate with the Center Director and Classroom Teacher to maintain a calm and conducive classroom environment, adhering to good early childhood learning standards without resorting to physical punishment.
  4. Ensure childcare routines are carried out promptly, hygienically, and consistently with good child development principles, including hand washing, tooth brushing, eating, napping, and transitions between activities.
  5. Assist children at snack, breakfast, and lunch time, maintaining the Head Start philosophy of serving family-style meals and ensuring children serve themselves.
  6. Ensure child safety through constant supervision, effective space arrangement, proper equipment maintenance, and regular practice of fire drills and other emergency procedures.
  7. Work as a team member to ensure continuity of curriculum and high standards of equality in the classroom, working individually with children who struggle during group activities.
  8. Document in half of the children's files in all content areas.
  9. Complete Individual Development Plans for each enrolled child, continuing the on-going assessment process, and maintaining written or computer records on each child.
  10. Observe, record, and report any child's behavior, sharing information appropriately with other staff members.
  11. Attend all staff meetings and other training as provided.
  12. After the new hire probationary period (90 days), Teacher Assistants must work toward and receive a Child Development Associate (CDA) credential.
  13. Perform any other duties assigned by the Center Director.
Requirements

Must attend annual pre-service training in summer (date TBD upon interview).

Education: Minimum High School Diploma or GED. (By September 30, 2013, all Teacher Assistants must have a CDA Child Development Associate credential.)

Experience: Some experience and ability to work with pre-school children.

Skills: Must have a warm, supportive, pleasant, and positive attitude toward young children and parents. Must be reliable. Must be flexible in receiving assignments or adapting to changes in the program. Must be willing to accept supervision to improve work performance.

Working Conditions

Regular working hours: 8:00 am - 4:00 pm. Some irregular working hours required. Not required to work alone. Some out-of-town and overnight travel required. No hazardous conditions.
