Position Overview:

The Patient Education Specialist for Surgical Services plays a crucial role in guiding patients through the pre-booking process for cataract surgery, ensuring they feel informed and confident in their healthcare decisions. This role emphasizes the importance of education, communication, and collaboration with the surgical team to present patients with optimal surgical options.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate a deep commitment to delivering exceptional service and fostering strong relationships with patients and internal stakeholders after identifying candidates for surgery.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Collaborates with Surgeons during patient consultations to enhance patient understanding of surgical and product choices.
  • Develops tailored educational standards for each patient regarding services, experiences, and available product options.
  • Oversees financial discussions with patients, clarifying insurance and payment alternatives.
  • Enhances organizational value by effectively educating patients about available services and options.
  • Responds promptly to patient inquiries regarding surgical options and assists in identifying the most suitable products for their unique experiences.
  • Takes responsibility for managing and advancing their assignments to meet established objectives.
  • Maintains clear communication channels to ensure patients, staff, and physicians are informed about educational resources and materials.
  • Regularly updates the leadership team on program performance, deliverables, and metrics.
  • Acts as a liaison with the surgical scheduling team, ensuring follow-up on completed outcomes.
  • Identifies and addresses areas for improvement in educational processes, tools, and methodologies.
  • Manages vendor relationships as necessary.
  • Ensures adherence to all organizational policies and procedures, recommending improvements to management when needed.
  • Stays informed about advancements in technology and integrates this knowledge to enhance current practices.
Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor's degree or relevant field experience.

Experience: Minimum of 5 years in a retail or healthcare environment, with 1-2 years of experience in application systems preferred.

Skills:
  • Comprehensive understanding of HIPAA regulations and practices.
  • Familiarity with ophthalmology-focused EMR systems is highly desirable.
  • Proficient in MS Office applications, including MS Project, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, capable of addressing both small and large audiences.
  • Strong organizational and time-management abilities, with a knack for prioritizing and delegating tasks.
