Position Overview

The Idaho National Laboratory (INL) is seeking a skilled Nuclear System Engineer to join our Reactor Project Engineering team, focusing on the National Reactor Innovation Center (NRIC). This role involves working at our advanced Materials and Fuels Complex (MFC) with a unique 4x10 work schedule, allowing for every Friday off. The NRIC testbeds are designed to facilitate the testing of pioneering microreactor technologies, benefiting from MFC's extensive nuclear fuels research and post-irradiation examination capabilities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Serve as the lead system engineer for various reactor systems operating at the NRIC testbeds, overseeing advanced microreactor systems and suggesting enhancements to reactor demonstrators.
  • Monitor performance, track trends, and maintain systems during reactor operational phases.
  • Apply expertise in national consensus codes and standards for safety-related reactor systems, ensuring compliance with all design requirements.
  • Conduct oversight and evaluations of safety-related reactor systems and equipment.
  • Participate as a member of the Integrated Product Team (IPT) across multiple advanced microreactor initiatives.
  • Execute engineering calculations, prepare specifications, conduct analyses, perform testing, generate reports, and maintain relevant data for reactor systems and equipment.
  • Manage configuration for assigned systems and designs.
  • Collaborate directly with the Technical Program Manager and Demonstration Reactor Lead Engineer to ensure reactors meet nuclear safety standards.
  • Undertake additional design and system engineering tasks as directed, including:
    • Designing and overseeing the development and installation of various support systems and equipment.
    • Working with project leads to create detailed design drawings, including physical layouts and installation specifics.
    • Developing control system wiring and logic hardware design.
    • Creating system and equipment design documents such as process and instrument control drawings, system design descriptions, calculations, and analyses.
    • Exhibiting strong teamwork skills and effectively organizing and leading tasks.
QualificationsMinimum Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in Nuclear Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related field with 5-8 years of experience, or a Master's degree with 3-6 years of experience.
  • Experience as a system engineer for safety-related reactor systems and equipment in a nuclear power environment is preferred.
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy "Q" clearance, necessitating U.S. Citizenship.
Compensation and Benefits
  • Compensation for this position ranges from Level 3 ($91,588) to Level 4 ($109,908), based on education, relevant experience, and credentials.
