Job Summary:

The Phlebotomist I at University Hospital, Newark NJ, is responsible for collecting blood specimens from patients, processing computerized worksheets, and entering orders for laboratory tests into the computer terminal. The ideal candidate will ensure proper collection and processing of specimens, perform routine procedures such as GTT, 2hr PP, blood cultures, and bleeding times, and assist in training phlebotomy students.

Responsibilities:

  • Collect blood specimens from patients in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Process computerized worksheets and enter orders for laboratory tests into the computer terminal.
  • Perform routine procedures such as GTT, 2hr PP, blood cultures, and bleeding times.
  • Assist in training phlebotomy students and complete Phlebotomy Competency Assessment evaluations.

Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Successful completion of a phlebotomy course given by an academically recognized school of health-related professions.
  • Certified by ASCP, NCA, or equivalent agency, or eligibility to sit for the certification examination.
