Museum Registrar Job Description

The Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art is seeking a highly skilled Museum Registrar to oversee the ethical and legal use of its collections. This critical position reports to the Head of Exhibitions and Collection Services and leads the entire collections management and registration duties of the 20,000-object collection.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Document, maintain, transport, and exhibit the museum's art collection and loans.
  • Conduct periodic collections inventories and ensure artwork is properly appraised and insured.
  • Keep current with AAM Best Practices and international, national, and state laws concerning museum procedure and collections management.
  • Maintain and update all records, including loans, condition, location, exhibition, and publication records, and insurance values.
  • Oversee care and maintenance of galleries and storage areas.
  • Liaise with donors and facilitate long-term loans of art.
  • Plan, coordinate, and direct collection maintenance, implementing preventative conservation practices.
  • Respond to inquiries regarding collections and supervise visitors and volunteers in collections rooms.
  • Work with curators and other staff in the production of exhibition labels and installation and de-installation of exhibits.
  • Handle special projects, such as storage and database improvements.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree and 24 months of museum registration and/or collection management experience.
  • Equivalency/substitution: 48 months of related experience in lieu of the Bachelor's degree for a total of 72 months of related experience.
  • Skills: detail-oriented, highly organized, strong problem-solving initiatives, ability to work well with interdepartmental teams, knowledge of current museum registration practices, and knowledge in the area of art handling and installation.
  • Certifications: valid driver's license to drive university vehicles.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in Museum Studies or Art History.
  • Three to five years of experience in museum registration and collection management.
  • Knowledge of FileMaker systems collection database.
  • Ability to adapt to changing circumstances and unexpected situations.
  • Prior experience in AAM accreditation/re-accreditation.
