Position Overview:

The Commonwealth of Virginia is in search of a seasoned Investment Operations Manager to enhance the Investments Department. This role entails overseeing a dedicated team responsible for executing investment operations tasks for the Virginia Retirement System (VRS) fund. The manager will plan, organize, and lead the middle and back-office operations for both public assets and alternative investments.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensure the accuracy of investment operations by reviewing activities to confirm that securities and transactions are properly documented in internal systems.
  • Oversee the creation, execution, and management of operational workflows.
  • Collaborate with investment teams to understand their requirements for new investment strategies.
  • Act as the primary liaison for service providers to facilitate operational needs and resolve any issues.
  • Address escalated matters related to trading operations, collateral management, and reporting cycles.
  • Establish performance metrics to guarantee timely completion of tasks and high-quality service delivery to investment teams.
  • Assist in setting up new portfolios within internal systems and coordinate necessary systems testing.
  • Maintain written policies and procedures for the Operations team.
  • Provide leadership and serve as a role model for direct reports and team members.
  • Deliver constructive feedback through mentorship and coaching.
  • Recruit and nurture new talent.
  • Collaborate with the Chief Administrative Officer on strategic planning for the Operations unit.
  • Engage in special projects and prepare reports as requested by the Chief Administrative Officer and investment teams.

Minimum Qualifications:

A combination of education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, or a related field is required; a Bachelor's degree is preferred.

• Significant experience in Investment Operations, Accounting, Finance, or a related field, particularly in a leadership capacity.

• Proficiency in Microsoft Office and automated financial management systems.

• Strong quantitative, analytical, and project management skills.

• A process-oriented mindset with a keen interest in solving complex challenges.

• Ability to collaborate effectively across various investment and support groups.

• Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, along with strong interpersonal and leadership abilities.

• A commitment to high standards of work ethic, attention to detail, and excellence in service delivery.

• A solid foundation in finance, accounting, and investment management.

Additional Considerations:

  • 10 years or more of management experience in Investment Operations or a related Accounting/Finance role.
  • A Master's degree in business administration or other relevant advanced qualifications is advantageous.
