The position of Court Clerk is integral to the functioning of various court systems including Criminal, Civil, Youth, Family, Traffic, Juvenile, Truancy, Wellness, and Traditional Courts. This role demands a high level of efficiency, precision, and meticulous attention to detail. The Court Clerk undertakes a range of technical clerical tasks associated with the operations of the Tribal Court and Judicial Services team. Responsibilities are executed following specific and detailed guidelines regarding procedures, methods, and techniques. Independent judgment may be required on occasion.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
The following duties represent the essential functions of the position. The absence of a task does not limit management's ability to assign related responsibilities:
- Complies with the Clerk's Manual and adheres to all established policies and procedures with speed, accuracy, and meticulous attention to detail.
- Prepares and reviews legal documents ensuring completeness and compliance.
- Properly stamps and processes legal documents received in the clerk's office, forwarding them to the designated clerk or judge.
- Guides litigants in completing legal documents and understanding tribal law without providing legal counsel.
- Maintains confidentiality in accordance with the Nisqually Tribe's policies.
- Provides clerical and technical support to Judicial Services personnel.
- Organizes and maintains case files systematically.
- Participates in training sessions as mandated by the Chief Court Clerk or Court Administrator.
- Supports fellow clerks and fulfills their responsibilities during their absence.
- Engages in community initiatives as directed by the Chief Court Clerk or Court Administrator.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- One (1) year of experience as a Court Clerk or two (2) years in a legal/judicial secretarial role.
- Possession of a valid driver's license and eligibility for coverage under the Tribe's insurance policy.
- Must be bondable.
- Ability to pass a criminal background check and drug screening.
This position reports directly to the Chief Court Clerk.
SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES
• Understanding of tribal court systems, tribal law, and legal terminology.
• Familiarity with contemporary office practices, procedures, and equipment.
• Proficiency in computer systems and software, particularly Microsoft applications.
• Capability to perform basic arithmetic and accurate computations.
• Skill in crafting written communications with proper grammar and punctuation.
• Effective oral and written communication abilities.
• Capacity to function in high-pressure and potentially volatile environments.
