Join our team of dedicated professionals at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge as a Medical Laboratory Assistant. In this role, you will play a vital part in the laboratory team, supporting the preparation and processing of clinical laboratory tests for diagnosis and treatment of patients.
Responsibilities:- Perform preparatory functions necessary to complete routine and high complexity tests, including centrifuging, pouring off specimens, preparing specimens for testing, and archiving specimens.
- Prepare peripheral smears and stain them by automated method.
- Load primary bar-coded specimens on an analyzer and perform primary inoculation of microbiology specimens, including slide preparation and staining by automated method.
- Prepare 24 hour urine containers with preservatives and monitor work pending reports.
- Communicate critical results and follow the laboratory's procedures for specimen handling and processing.
- Identify problems that may adversely affect a test result and correct or notify a licensed laboratory employee to assist.
- Utilize the Laboratory Information System (LIS) in patient accessioning and monitor incomplete and collection lists.
- Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory equipment, such as centrifuges and stainers.
- Communicate with the next shift and other staff regarding patient samples or equipment performance.
- Perform phlebotomy if deemed competent and maintain a clean and organized work area.
- Assist with management of the pneumatic tube system, processing, and distributing specimens.
- Handle biohazard waste according to policy and maintain strict confidentiality of patient, co-worker, and business information.
- High School diploma or equivalent required; college degree or courses in hard sciences preferred.
- Basic computer skills, medical terminology, and phlebotomy skills preferred.
- No previous experience required; experience in laboratory testing procedures and/or phlebotomy preferred.
- Certification by NCA, ASCP, or comparable institution is desirable.
