Position: Lead Electrical Systems Engineer

EMPLOYMENT TERMS:

  • Duration: 6+ months with potential for extension or transition to permanent role
  • Work Arrangement: Hybrid
  • Compensation: $84/hour

OVERVIEW:

Key Requirements:

  • Proficiency in Altium or equivalent design software is essential
  • Experience in motor control or power systems is necessary
  • Expertise in schematic PCB design for intricate boards, ideally 12-16 layers
  • Ability to generate schematics

DETAILED RESPONSIBILITIES:

Core Duties:

  • Design and develop embedded controller systems that interface with avionics, including sensors and electromechanical/electrohydraulic actuators.
  • Take ownership of the design and rugged electronic hardware assemblies throughout the entire product lifecycle, from initial concept and requirements gathering to design, analysis, prototyping, schematic capture, layout, design review, testing/verification, and production release.
  • Assist in avionics controller architecture evaluations, performance assessments, specification development, component selection, and roadmap planning.
  • Conduct risk assessments, failure modes and effects analyses (FMECA), and design for test/manufacture/cost (DFx), along with root-cause analysis of testing discrepancies.
  • Engage in program-level technology advancements, mission assurance, safety initiatives, and enhancements to the avionics development process.
  • Communicate development progress, risks, and challenges effectively to management.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering, or a related field
  • Comprehensive understanding of electronics hardware development, including complex circuit card design, consumer electronics, wireless devices, or advanced electronic products in commercial or aerospace sectors
  • Experience in analog, digital, or mixed-signal circuit design, encompassing analysis, simulation, testing, troubleshooting, and component selection
  • Familiarity with signal integrity, power distribution, grounding, and general PCB layout principles
  • Knowledge of various components and their applications, including microcontrollers, processors, FPGAs, ADCs, DACs, operational amplifiers, power supplies, volatile and non-volatile memory, and MOSFETs
  • Understanding of common communication protocols such as RS232, RS422, I2C, SPI, LVDS, Ethernet, CAN, or PCIe
  • Awareness of radiation impacts on electronics and application of this knowledge to designs intended for space applications
  • Willingness to engage hands-on, both independently and collaboratively, throughout the development and production phases of electronic assembly
  • Ability to build trust, maintain positive professional relationships, and contribute to a collaborative culture
  • Must be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or legally admitted refugee/asylee

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master's degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering, or a related field
  • Typically, candidates possess 5-7 years of experience (4+ years with a Master's) in the design, development, testing, and operation of vehicle avionics systems
  • Experience in hardware development, integration, and testing of launch vehicle avionics systems
  • Basic knowledge of motor controller design and functionality
  • Proven experience in designing high-reliability safety-critical Class 2/3 board assemblies; familiarity with IPC-A-600/610, DO-254, and similar standards
  • Proficiency in scripting, programming, and analysis using tools such as TCL, Python, Linux shell, Windows batch scripting, C/C++, MATLAB/Simulink, HSPICE, and HFSS (or similar modeling/analysis tools)
