Position Overview
The Electrical Systems Research Engineer is tasked with the design and development of control systems for pioneering automated material handling equipment and systems. This role involves creating concepts, algorithms, and schematics for material handling machinery. The engineer will collaborate with a multidisciplinary development team, including mechanical and electrical engineers, to design and construct comprehensive mechatronic prototypes and systems. This position requires expertise in control system architecture, network design, electrical schematics, and power distribution. The engineer will also be responsible for programming machine control software (PLC, IPC) and producing electrical schematics. Furthermore, the engineer will engage in the company's New Product Development process to establish requirements, draft specifications, and generate engineering estimates and documentation necessary for risk analysis, testing reports, equipment certifications, commissioning procedures, troubleshooting, and training. The engineer will also support production and deployment teams to ensure a seamless transition of new products from prototype to full-scale production.
Key Responsibilities

- Investigate and assess new electrical control technologies and devices.
- Specify electrical hardware and control devices based on application needs, including PLC components and I/O modules, servo and VFD controllers, and field I/O devices.
- Familiarity with distributed control solutions utilizing widely accepted I/O networks such as Ethernet IP, ProfiNet, Sercos, and I/O link.
- Lead the design of comprehensive control solutions for sophisticated automated systems.
- Utilize kinematic equations of motion to formulate material handling algorithms and timing parameters for controls.
- Develop and implement machine control software across various industrial control platforms, including Rockwell, Schneider, and Siemens.
- Oversee the electrical design of control panels for research and development initiatives using AutoCAD Electrical.
- Create detailed documentation to facilitate the transition of R&D products to production and deployment teams.
- Maintain a thorough understanding of customer operations and specifications.
- Communicate and collaborate effectively with R&D team members to achieve project objectives.
- Demonstrate initiative and the ability to design and develop next-generation products with minimal supervision.
- Comprehend complex systems and processes at a high level of detail.
- Work efficiently under deadlines, ensuring accuracy while adhering to budget and schedule constraints.
- Guide and mentor less experienced engineers through instruction and role modeling.
- Willingness to travel as needed (less than 25%).
- Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or higher in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology.
- A minimum of 5 years of experience in industrial automation.
- Expertise in Rockwell, Schneider, or Siemens industrial control products.
- Experience troubleshooting 460 VAC and 24 VDC control systems using tools such as multimeters and oscilloscopes.
- Familiarity with LEAN and/or AGILE methodologies is advantageous.
- Proficient in AutoCAD Electrical.
