Position Overview

The SBA Underwriter role involves the meticulous collection, evaluation, and interpretation of financial and credit data to determine the creditworthiness of the company's commercial SBA clientele, particularly focusing on moderately complex credit relationships. This position collaborates with Business/Commercial Bankers to enhance both new and existing loan relationships, prioritizing the enhancement of credit quality while minimizing risk and ensuring compliance with SBA regulations.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Conduct thorough reviews and assessments of financial and credit data, including financial statements, tax documents, and credit histories to evaluate the creditworthiness of borrowers and guarantors.
  2. Compile comprehensive financial and analytical reports for each entity reviewed, detailing historical financial performance, cash flow analysis, and basic projections.
  3. Investigate relevant industry and market trends that may impact customers' business operations.
  4. Draft detailed summaries of analyses for both new and existing loan relationships, focusing on cash flow sufficiency, collateral evaluation, and repayment sources.
  5. Communicate critical analytical findings and insights to Business/Commercial Bankers, management, or credit officers.
  6. Assist in the oversight of credit files, ensuring compliance with financial reporting requirements and covenant adherence.
  7. Exercise independent judgment in credit analysis and take appropriate actions based on findings.
  8. Engage in departmental or company-wide initiatives, proposing enhancements to processes as necessary.
  9. Ensure adherence to SBA SOP rules and requirements for SBA 7(A) and SBA 504 loan programs.
  10. Collaborate with CDC on 504 loan transactions.
  11. Provide expert guidance and support to Business/Commercial Bankers and clients.
  12. Lead the review and training of junior Portfolio Managers.
  13. Participate in joint meetings with Commercial Bankers to gather additional business insights.
  14. Stay informed about industry developments, market conditions, and regulatory changes affecting lending criteria.
  15. Comply with all relevant federal and state regulations, including the Bank Secrecy Act (BSA) and anti-money laundering laws.
  16. Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  1. Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Business, Economics, Finance, or a related field; alternatively, a high school diploma with a minimum of 10 years of relevant experience.
  2. At least 7 years of experience in credit analysis or portfolio management within a commercial lending environment; SBA experience is preferred.
  3. Demonstrated expertise in underwriting commercial lending, including commercial real estate and SBA lending.
  4. Proficient in analyzing financial statements, including balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow reports.
  5. Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  6. Excellent business math skills.
  7. Ability to think critically and communicate findings clearly, both verbally and in writing.
  8. Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  9. Ability to work collaboratively and find common ground in problem-solving.
  10. Commitment to ongoing professional development and staying updated on industry trends.
  11. Exceptional verbal, written, and interpersonal skills to effectively engage with clients, colleagues, and management.
  12. Willingness to travel to branch locations as required.
  13. Flexibility to work varied hours as needed.
  14. Must be bondable.

Compensation

The salary range for this position is competitive, reflecting the candidate's experience and qualifications, along with potential commission and annual bonuses based on the bank's profitability.
