Job Title: Refugee School Liaison

At Inspiritus Inc., we are seeking a highly motivated and dedicated Refugee School Liaison to join our team. This role is a critical part of our efforts to support refugee students and their families in achieving academic success.

Job Summary:

The Refugee School Liaison will serve as a bridge between home and school, providing academic supports and advocacy to empower refugee families in their child's academic endeavors. This role will work closely with schools, community organizations, and other stakeholders to identify students in need of specialized support and connect them with resources and services.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Communicate with parents to encourage their involvement in their child's education and provide support in navigating the American school system.
  2. Conduct American school orientations for newly arrived refugee students and their families.
  3. Register refugee students for school and provide support in accessing educational resources and services.
  4. Advocate for refugee students and their families with schools and other stakeholders to ensure their needs are met.
  5. Develop and implement programs to support refugee students and their families, including parent workshops and family literacy building activities.
  6. Conduct educational assessments and provide data to inform program development and improvement.
  7. Recruit students for services and ensure information flows effectively between schools and parents.
  8. Cultivate relationships with stakeholders to leverage influence and support the program.
  9. Attend meetings, training, and conferences to enhance job knowledge and skills.
Requirements:
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in education or human services-related field.
  • Minimum of two years of direct work experience in youth and/or human services.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
  • Experience working in a culturally diverse environment and high level of cultural competence.
  • Ability to set limits and maintain the helping role of the practitioner.
  • Excellent computer skills, accurate typing, and knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience coordinating diverse teams of volunteers and/or interns.
  • Familiarity with major Birmingham schools, social services programs, public transportation, employers, and neighborhoods.
  • Experience with human services programs.
  • Reads, writes, and speaks a relevant foreign language.
Work Environment:

This role operates in a professional office environment and in the field, requiring the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets, and bend or stand as necessary.

Travel:

This role requires up to 50% local travel.
