Core Responsibilities:
GENERAL OVERVIEW:

Under regular supervision and adhering to established protocols, this role involves performing a range of routine laboratory support tasks, including the collection, processing, order entry, and transportation of laboratory specimens and materials. Interaction with patients, laboratory personnel, and caregivers is essential, requiring a courteous and professional demeanor.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Prepares patient specimens for laboratory analysis, focusing on pre-analytic and post-analytic processes.
2. Inputs patient demographic and test order details into laboratory information systems in accordance with training protocols and in a timely manner, ensuring confidentiality of patient data.
3. Comprehends and adheres to HFHS Standards of Excellence to foster a culture of exceptional customer service when engaging with patients, colleagues, and caregivers. Demonstrates consistent competency, productivity, and compassion. Addresses inquiries from patients and staff effectively.
4. Reviews laboratory request forms for complete demographic and order entry information, resolving discrepancies as necessary. Exercises caution in specimen handling and order entry to maintain the identity and integrity of samples.
5. Within established guidelines and with appropriate training and supervisor approval, may conduct selected CLIA waived tests. Following successful competency assessment, may perform processing, testing, and reporting independently.
6. Adheres to established departmental and institutional policies and procedures, objectives, quality assessment and improvement programs, safety, environmental, and infection control standards. Contributes to maintaining a safe workplace and reports any unsafe conditions to supervisors.
7. Assists in training new employees and students. Participates in departmental continuing education and in-service training programs.
8. May occasionally perform blood sample collection or phlebotomy after completing required competency training.
9. May instruct patients and healthcare staff on proper lab specimen collection and handling techniques.
10. Within established parameters, may undertake various clerical tasks, transport specimens, prepare samples for testing, operate autoclaves and glassware cleaning equipment, record temperatures, and utilize specified laboratory equipment.
11. May perform additional duties as required to support operational needs.

Physical Demands/Working Conditions:

Regular exposure to infectious materials from specimens, organs, and tissues. Occasional exposure to radiation hazards and odorous or toxic chemicals. Must be capable of standing and walking for extended periods to fulfill work responsibilities. Must accurately perform computer order entry in accordance with peer-based productivity standards.
