Inpatient Blood Collection Specialist:

The Inpatient Blood Collection Specialist is responsible for obtaining blood samples from patients in various hospital units, including inpatient nursing units, surgical departments, and pre-admission testing areas. During peak patient times, this role may also involve working in the Emergency Department.

This specialist is tasked with drawing blood from admitted patients, ensuring a high standard of care and efficiency.

Shifts Available:
5 AM - 1 PM, 1 PM - 9 PM, and 9 PM - 7 AM. The morning shift specialist is expected to draw blood from 25-30 patients during early rounds, which includes routine, STAT, and ALERT draws. This role operates in a dynamic, patient-centered environment with a significant patient volume. Team collaboration and effective communication with fellow phlebotomists are essential. A minimum of one year of experience and ASCP certification as a phlebotomy technician is preferred.

Outpatient Blood Collection Specialist:

The Outpatient Blood Collection Specialist draws blood from walk-in patients at the main hospital campus, where appointments are not necessary, and patient volume fluctuates throughout the day.

Responsibilities include interpreting lab orders and entering them into the system, ensuring that patient flow is monitored closely to minimize wait times.

High standards of customer service are expected to maintain positive patient relations.


Outreach Blood Collection Specialist:


The Outreach Blood Collection Specialist collects blood specimens from individuals of all ages and prepares samples for transport to testing laboratories.

This role requires independence and efficiency in a fast-paced environment with high patient volume. Strong customer service skills and attention to detail are crucial, as is the ability to accurately interpret physician orders.

Additional responsibilities include responding to patient inquiries regarding lab results and operational hours.

Reliable transportation is necessary, as travel within the service area is required, including during inclement weather.

Key Responsibilities:
Inpatient Blood Collection Specialist:
  • Collect blood specimens from patients of all ages using various techniques.
  • Ensure compliance with lab policies to minimize patient discomfort.
  • Label specimens accurately at the bedside.
  • Maintain adherence to positive patient identification protocols.
  • Respond to various alerts throughout the hospital.

Outpatient Blood Collection Specialist:
  • Collect blood specimens while ensuring minimal discomfort to patients.
  • Label specimens in the presence of patients.
  • Utilize computer applications for patient registration and lab orders.

Outreach Blood Collection Specialist:
  • Collect blood specimens from patients of all ages.
  • Prepare specimens for laboratory shipment.
  • Accurately enter lab orders into the system.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area.

Qualifications:
Education:
A high school diploma or equivalent is required.

Work Experience:
Preferred experience in phlebotomy (Inpatient) and three years as an ASCP-certified phlebotomy technician (Outreach).

Licenses and Certifications:
Certification is preferred.

Required Knowledge and Skills:
Proficient computer skills for patient registration and lab ordering are essential, along with strong organizational and interpersonal skills to effectively collaborate with healthcare team members.
