Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Substation Equipment Engineer to join our team at Consolidated Edison Company of New York, Inc. This role will involve designing, developing, and implementing electrical equipment for our substations, ensuring the safe and efficient operation of our transmission and distribution systems.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and develop electrical equipment specifications for substation equipment, including circuit breakers, power transformers, and switchgear.
  • Conduct technical analysis of bid proposals and review manufacturers' designs and drawings.
  • Perform factory and field inspections to ensure compliance with industry standards and company requirements.
  • Provide technical guidance and support to construction and operating departments during installation, commissioning, maintenance, and repair or replacement of equipment.
  • Prepare equipment and accessory purchase specifications, review and evaluate manufacturers' proposals and drawings.
  • Ensure that the department is kept up to date on the progress of projects, including the update of the budget.
  • Provide input for the development and update of equipment health indices and recommend planned equipment replacements.
  • Interface with equipment manufacturers, industry standards, and R&D organizations.
  • Perform vendor qualification activities and approve equipment suitable for our transmission and area substations.
  • Conduct and participate in field evaluation/analysis of field equipment or system misoperation, prepares failure analysis reports and other analyses as may be required.
  • Prepare test procedures for equipment commissioning or post-repair restoration.
  • Participate in the Company's Emergency Response Plan through a designated storm assignment.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) and 3-5 years of total work experience in development and application of technical principles in substation equipment rating, application, specification, engineering, operation, and maintenance.
  • Or Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering and 2 years of total work experience in development and application of technical principles in substation equipment rating, application, specification, engineering, operation, and maintenance.
  • Working knowledge of applicable codes and industry standards associated with the equipment.
  • Experience and/or knowledge of substation layout and major equipment including breakers, switches, and substation steel.
  • The ability to interpret layout, one-line, and schematic drawings.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, strong analytical, technical, and computer skills.
  • Proficiency with IEEE/ANSI Standards and National Electrical Safety Code.
  • Ability to write specifications and standards and coordinate engineering projects and assignments.

  • Develops and delivers effective presentations.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) Preferred, NY, NJ, and PA Professional Engineers License or be in the process of qualifying for a license.
