POSITION SUMMARY AND REQUIREMENTS:

The Outdoor School program at Shaver's Creek Environmental Center is in search of a passionate outdoor education professional dedicated to inspiring 5th graders through engaging experiences in nature. This is a part-time role with a maximum of 1500 hours during the contracted term. The program assistant will work 40-60 hours per week during the fall and spring program seasons, including pre-season preparation (approximately 14 weeks), and 24 hours per week during the off-season.

Key Responsibilities:

Support the Outdoor School (ODS) Directors with the following administrative tasks:
  • Recruit counselors and learning group leaders (LGL) through visits to PSU campus/classes (LGLs are seasonal educators at Shaver's Creek and PSU students; Counselors are PSU students).
  • Facilitate training for learning group leaders and cabin counselors.
  • Oversee volunteer background checks and training documentation.
  • Develop, revise, and enhance ODS curriculum.
  • Be present on-site during ODS to provide leadership and supervision for LGLs, counselors, and participants; address teacher inquiries and concerns.
  • Ensure smooth operation of the program on-site, including lessons, meals, and evening activities; this may involve overnight stays at camp one to two nights per week.
  • Assess the performance of learning group leaders and counselors through coursework reviews and direct observation; offer constructive feedback.
Additional Responsibilities:
  • Ensure participant safety and provide first aid when the school nurse is unavailable.
  • Serve as the director-on-duty overnight for one to two nights per week.
  • Coordinate evening programs during overnight duty, including leading campfire activities.
  • If needed, instruct 5th - 6th grade students in natural history and ecology lessons.
Job Requirements:
  • Must possess energy and a genuine enthusiasm for working with young people and their educators.
  • Demonstrated communication and interpersonal skills with students and teachers.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with college students, supporting their engagement with school students and providing feedback.
  • Capacity to work with a small team for extended hours (~16 hours/day) with limited privacy.
  • Experience in managing student behavior, preventing issues, and providing constructive feedback to staff.
  • Must be capable of leading hiking and running activities on uneven terrain; may require working outdoors in various weather conditions, responding to emergency signals appropriately.
  • First Aid/CPR certification (or willingness to obtain prior to starting) is required.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
