Summary:
To deliver precise patient assessment, testing, diagnostics, and monitoring under medical supervision to ensure high-quality patient care in accordance with the State of Licensure Pulmonary Care Act and Department Policies and Procedures.
Work Environment:
Responsibilities will primarily take place indoors at a long-term healthcare facility, encompassing all areas, including patient rooms, with both carpeted and tiled surfaces. The role involves regular interaction with colleagues, healthcare personnel, residents, and visitors. Due to the nature of the facility's operations, employees may encounter occasional slippery surfaces, objects on floors, chemicals, sharp instruments, hazardous materials, and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and communicable diseases, along with high-pressure medical situations.
Key Responsibilities:
This outline is intended ONLY to identify the fundamental responsibilities and requirements of this job classification and does not restrict the assignment of other job-related tasks at the discretion of the Director of the Pulmonary Care Department.
- Demonstrate proficiency in clinical performance, analysis, and comprehension of diagnostic procedures. Ability to identify and understand disease processes, along with the psychological and physiological needs of patients and their families.
- Execute all therapeutic components of pulmonary care under the guidance of the department medical director, adhering to departmental policies and procedures to ensure safe, quality care for the adult and geriatric populations.
- Conduct thorough and timely pulmonary care assessments to guarantee effective therapy delivery. Monitor patients' rehabilitation objectives for relevance and consistency.
- Administer ongoing care to patients requiring oxygen therapy, artificial airway management, mechanical ventilation, and weaning, among other services, in accordance with B.R.C., AARC, and departmental policies.
- Dispense respiratory-related medications to the tracheobronchial tree per physician directives, B.R.C., AARC standards, and departmental protocols. Accurately document medication administration in the medication administration records (MARS) as per physician orders.
- Consistently and accurately record patient assessments in medical records, including clinical parameters such as breath sounds, tracheostomy tube data, sputum production, and ventilator settings based on physician orders.
- Provide comprehensive verbal reports to the incoming shift regarding patient conditions, changes in orders, and responses to care. Ensure accurate information on vital signs and therapy tolerances is communicated.
- Perform diagnostic procedures as per physician orders, including sputum collection and arterial blood gas analysis, following B.R.C. safety standards and departmental policies.
- Participate in physician rounds and update orders accordingly in the daily assignment record for respiratory care.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization in the equipment and supply room, ensuring easy access to supplies and adherence to safety protocols.
- Upon patient transfer or discharge, promptly remove all equipment from the patient room, ensuring proper cleaning and disinfection.
- Adhere to universal precautions in accordance with CDC guidelines and the facility's infection control policies to ensure safety for oneself, colleagues, and patients.
- Moderate physical activity required.
- Ability to handle average-weight objects up to twenty-five (25) pounds.
- Standing and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day.
Educational Requirements:
Graduate of an American Medical Association (AMA) accredited Respiratory Therapy Program, with NBRC and state licensure credentials.
