Position Summary:

Under the general guidance of a Maintenance Shop superintendent, the Heavy Equipment Technician is responsible for executing a range of manual and semi-skilled tasks associated with the upkeep of vehicles and road construction machinery.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform cleaning, lubrication, and assist in the setup, adjustment, and repair of various types of on-road and off-road machinery and vehicles.
  • Temporarily operate equipment for troubleshooting and diagnostic purposes, utilizing hand and power tools for maintenance adjustments.
  • Conduct inspections of brake systems, steering mechanisms, wheel bearings, and other critical components to ensure optimal functionality.
  • Utilize hand tools such as screwdrivers, pliers, and wrenches, along with power tools including pneumatic wrenches and welding equipment.
  • Adjust and reline brakes, align wheels, and reassemble machinery after maintenance.
  • Examine and adjust safety guards, loose bolts, and specified safety devices.
  • Carry out routine maintenance tasks such as oil changes, battery checks, and lubrication of machinery.
  • Test drive vehicles to identify malfunctions and ensure proper operation.
  • Utilize hydraulic jacks or hoists to elevate trucks, buses, and heavy equipment for maintenance.
  • Attach diagnostic instruments to machinery and interpret readings to identify issues.
  • Rebuild diesel or gas engines as necessary.
  • Verify dimensions and clearances of parts to ensure compliance with factory specifications.
  • Document maintenance activities and findings through written and oral reports.
  • Work independently when required and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues and the public.

Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Acceptable driving record.
  • A minimum of 5 years of relevant experience.
