Clinical Laboratory Assistant

The Clinical Lab Assistant plays a vital role in providing exceptional care to patients at Vail Health. This position involves performing a variety of clinical and support functions, including specimen collection, processing, and distribution, as well as phlebotomy and laboratory information system functions. The ideal candidate will have a strong knowledge of laboratory procedures and be able to work independently with minimal supervision.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform routine and complex phlebotomy procedures, including venipuncture, finger and heel sticks, and blood cultures.
- Demonstrate thorough knowledge of the Cerner Millennium LIS system, including laboratory specimen processing, reporting, and ABN checking.
- Organize work to meet deadlines and work under stressful conditions.
- Provide the highest level of customer service to all customers, including physicians, nurses, technicians, patients, and colleagues.
- Coordinate and organize front desk activities, including complete and accurate processing of specimens and orders.
- Answer questions relating to specimen collection, processing, turnaround, reference lab testing, and pricing.
- Maintain lab records in accordance with regulations and distribute reports in a timely manner.
- Interact effectively with lab and internal and external lab clients, including infection control, occupational and employee health, contract accounts, and physician offices.
- Obtain DOT hazardous shipping certification and be responsible for shipping specimens to reference laboratories.
- Maintain par inventory levels of supplies for specimen collection and processing areas.
- Perform maintenance and cleaning of equipment used in specimen processing area.
Requirements:
- One year phlebotomy experience preferred.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification preferred.
- Cerner Millennium LIS system experience preferred.
- Must possess, or be able to obtain within 90 days, the computer skills necessary to complete online learning requirements for job-specific competencies, access online forms and policies, complete online benefits enrollment, etc.
- Must have working knowledge of the English language, including reading, writing, and speaking English.
