Job Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Water Safety Instructor to join our team at Hayward Area Recreation & Park District. As a Water Safety Instructor, you will be responsible for teaching swim skills to participants of all ages and skill levels, as well as providing instruction in water safety courses and swim team programs.

Key Responsibilities
  • Teach swim skills to participants of all ages and skill levels, including children and adults
  • Provide instruction in water safety courses, including CPR and first aid
  • Teach swim team participants and assist with swim team programs
  • Supervise and evaluate course participants, ensuring their safety and well-being
  • Conduct patron surveillance and act as a lifeguard when necessary
  • Assist with maintaining the pool and surrounding facility area
  • Perform related duties as required
Requirements
  • Current certification in Lifeguard Training, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, and standard First Aid
  • Current Water Safety Instructor certificate
  • Previous experience with aquatics programs
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and respond to changing situations
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Working Conditions

The work environment for this position will be primarily outdoors, with frequent exposure to sun, heat, and humidity. The incumbent will be required to wear a uniform and protective equipment, and will be expected to work in and around water, as well as on slippery and/or wet surfaces.

Physical Demands

The physical demands of this position include frequent sitting, standing, walking, running, jumping, climbing, swimming, diving, reaching, turning, bending, squatting, kneeling, crawling, and pushing/pulling. The incumbent will also be required to lift and carry items/persons up to 50 pounds, and to work outdoors in the sun for prolonged periods of time.

Special Requirements
  • Must be at least 16 years of age
  • Must possess a valid work permit if 16-18 years of age and still in high school
  • Must pass a fingerprint and/or background clearance prior to employment
  • Must provide proof of negative TB Skin Test
  • Must verify ID and ability to work in the USA
