Under the direct supervision of the Office Manager, this role encompasses specialized legal assistant responsibilities within the Crook County District Attorney's Office, along with various general office support tasks in a legal environment.

This position involves a range of experienced legal support activities, technical tasks, and administrative functions.

Key Responsibilities:


The purpose of this job description is to provide a representative overview of the primary duties and responsibilities associated with this position.

Executes legal administrative tasks within the scope of authority, adhering to DA Office and County policies and applicable laws; job duties may vary according to specific assignments and training.

Must possess the ability to cultivate and maintain positive working relationships with colleagues, supervisors, court personnel, law enforcement, and the public.

Reviews legal documents for precision and completeness, monitors deadlines and processing requirements.

Assists attorneys in trial preparation, organizes interviews, hearings, meetings, and manages attorneys' schedules, notifying clients, law enforcement officers, legal experts, and witnesses as necessary.

Processes, reviews, and maintains case files, supporting documents, legal correspondence, and ensures confidentiality.
Provides clerical and administrative support to attorneys as requested.
Drafts and creates legal documents; updates case files and maintains the computer database.

Receives and transmits information to and from other agencies and jurisdictions; reviews, sorts, and distributes mail, phone calls, and other correspondence while accommodating walk-in clients.

Balances petty cash weekly, including online payments, making deposits, and reconciling the cash box.

Utilizes specialized software, composes and creates letters, memoranda, and legal documents based on general direction from attorneys, the Office Manager, or as directed by the Child Support Enforcement Agent.


Indexes and electronically files correspondence, pleadings, discovery materials, notes, memoranda, reports, and other documents according to a prescribed system for restitution, probation, and child support matters.

Assists attorneys with all aspects of case preparation, including trial organization and preparation for court hearings. Coordinates exhibits, files, and other supporting documents, manages trial logistics, and supports attorneys in the courtroom.

Performs a wide array of paralegal tasks including document preparation, maintaining accurate and detailed records, verifying information accuracy, researching discrepancies, and documenting information.

Performs additional duties as required by business needs.

Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:

Knowledge of:
County policies and procedures
DA Office policies, procedures, organization, and operations
Relevant statutes, policies, and specialized software applications.
Basic legal system and law enforcement agency procedures and terminology.
Principles of record keeping, case files, and records management.

Coordinating and executing a variety of technical legal support functions
Operating a personal computer with standard and specialized business software programs, including Microsoft Office products.
Reading legal documents and extracting pertinent information.
Learning to draft, prepare, file, and distribute various types of legal documents
Interacting tactfully and courteously with individuals seeking information about DA Office functions and activities.
Effectively managing interactions with hostile, angry, and emotional clients

Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with colleagues, attorneys, law enforcement agencies, and other participants in the criminal justice process.

Communicating effectively both verbally and in writing.

Ability to:


Collaborate, communicate effectively, organize and prioritize tasks to meet deadlines, work under direct supervision, and apply common sense to execute detailed written or oral instructions.


Promote the goals and priorities of the DA Office, act with honesty, and uphold the ethical standards of the District Attorney's Office, including respecting the confidential nature of information and records.

Ability and skill to contribute positively to the work environment

Work Environment:
Work is conducted in a standard office setting. This role is primarily sedentary; however, some filing, lifting, and carrying may be necessary. This position routinely utilizes standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work:

This is a full-time office position. The work schedule is Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Required Education and Experience

High School diploma or equivalent.
One (1) year of office clerical support and computer experience; OR any satisfactory combination of experience and training that demonstrates the knowledge and abilities to perform the above-described duties
Possession or ability to obtain a valid Oregon driver's license within 30 days of hire date.
Law Enforcement Data System (LEDS) and CJIS certification from the State of Oregon within six months of hire.
Must have Notary Certification or be able to complete within 90 days of employment

Additional Eligibility Requirements:
Able to complete a thorough employment and/or criminal history check and drug screen.

Final candidates will be required to provide official proof of college degree and certified transcripts (not required for all positions).
