Optical Engineering Research and Development Specialist

Job SummaryWe are seeking a highly skilled Optical Engineering Research and Development Specialist to join our Research Applications Laboratory. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing R&D, hardware/software development, data collection, data analysis, field deployment, and end-user training for national security, high-consequence laser programs.
Key Responsibilities- Perform high-power-laser work with a multidisciplinary technical team.
- Conduct laser material effects data analysis.
- Represent Sandia in discussions with government agency personnel involved in the national nuclear incident response mission.
- Bachelor's Degree in Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or relevant STEM field, plus four years of relevant laboratory experience.
- Experience in designing and performing complex laboratory tests, analyzing results of laser experiments, and drawing conclusions.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level and SCI clearance.
- Master's Degree in Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or relevant STEM field.
- Experience in working with kW Class IV lasers, performing data analysis using Matlab, Python, or similar programming languages, and operating National Instruments DAQs and LabView programming.

Our team provides innovative design and development of specialized firing systems and associated electro-mechanical devices, as well as training and support for nuclear and non-nuclear response forces.
Security ClearanceSandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship.
